Novak Djokovic issued a warning to Carlos Alcaraz ahead of their upcoming clash in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on Sunday (July 14). It will be a rematch of last year's final at SW19, where the young Spaniard triumphed to win his second Grand Slam title.
On July 12, Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals, having previously overcome Vit Kopriva, Jacob Fearnley, Alexei Popyrin, Holger Rune, and Alex de Minaur (who withdrew).
Despite initial fitness doubts due to knee surgery, the Serb has displayed excellent form throughout the Grasscourt Major. He sailed past the Italian 6-4, 7-6(2), 6-4 to secure his place in his 10th final at the tournament.
Novak Djokovic later expressed his delight at playing on the "unique" Centre Court during his on-court interview. He mentioned that while he tries to enjoy the experience, his sole focus during a match is on winning.
"Every single time I find myself in this unique court, I really try to enjoy. But, obviously, during the match, it's business time, it's time to do your work, time to outplay your opponent," Djokovic said.
The Serb also said that while he was pleased to secure a spot in yet another final, he didn't intend to stop there and would try his best to lift the trophy at the end of the fortnight, sending a warning to Carlos Alcaraz.
"I am obviously very very satisfied, very pleased and happy to be in another final but I don't want to stop here. Hopefully, I will get my hands on that trophy on Sunday," he added.
Novak Djokovic: "Carlos Alcaraz is gonna win many more Grand Slams, not Wimbledon 2024"
Novak Djokovic praised Carlos Alcaraz during the on-court interview following his victory over Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
The Serb commended the 21-year-old Spaniard for his demeanor on and off the court, acknowledging him as one of the greatest players of this generation.
"He [Carlos Alcaraz] is a great example of someone as a young player who has a well-balanced life. A good family… a lot of charisma… carries himself well on and off the court. He’s deservedly one of the greatest 21-year-olds we’ve ever seen in this sport," Djokovic said.
However, Djokovic also joked that while he wishes Alcaraz success in winning many more Grand Slams in the future, he would prefer if the reigning French Open champion doesn't emerge victorious on Sunday.
"We’re gonna see a lot of him in the future, no doubt. He’s gonna win many more Grand Slams. Hopefully in two days, not this one. But in the future.. when I retire in about 15 years," the 24-time Major champion said.
