Jannik Sinner's coach Darren Cahill opened up about his thoughts on the Italian's biggest rival at the moment - Carlos Alcaraz - in an interview. The Aussie, instead of picking sides, chose to sit back and 'enjoy the show' put on by ATP's top stars.
Sinner and Alcaraz have shared all four Grand Slams this season, with the former winning the Australian Open and the US Open and Alcaraz winning the French Open and Wimbledon. Although Alexander Zverev sits at World No. 2, sandwiched between the two, there are very few doubts in the tennis world that Alcaraz is the closest rival to World No. 1 Sinner as things stand now.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Cahill proclaimed that he doesn't see either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner being better than the other and that he has a lot of respect for the Spaniard and his team. With the duo next battling at the ATP Finals, Cahill looks forward to seeing them in action against each other once again.
"I have a lot of respect for him. I will never say that Sinner is better than Alcaraz or vice versa. If they meet in the final in Turin, I will cheer for Jannik and enjoy the show," he said.
The head-to-head between the duo is 6-4 in favor of Carlos Alcaraz, with the World No. 3 winning all three of their encounters this year.
"The ATP does not make life easy for us" - Jannik Sinner's coach Darren Cahill on 2-week Masters events
Darren Cahill also spoke in the aforementioned interviewed about the plan Jannik Sinner and his team will be following next year, stating that they will make some changes to make sure he's in his best shape during the Grand Slams.
Cahill also called out the ATP Tour for making the schedule difficult with two-week Masters 1000 tournaments but hopes to find enough pockets of rest for the World No. 1 to keep up his fitness through the year.
"There will be things that we will change, such as the transition from Miami to clay, which this year came very abruptly. We will prepare it better, also to avoid risking injuries. Everything will revolve around the Grand Slams," he said.
"The ATP does not make life easy for us by lengthening the Masters 1000s, some of which last two weeks. So it is not easy to rest. We will make choices. Jannik must also improve his physical appearance. He trusts Vagnozzi and me a lot," he added.
At the upcoming ATP Finals, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been placed in separate groups. While Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur, the Spaniard will battle against Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev.
