Learner Tien sent a heartfelt message to his parents after causing one of the biggest upsets in Australian Open history by taking out three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev in the second round. The American won the match in a topsy-turvy five-set thriller.
Tien kicked off his campaign as a qualifier seeded 16th and claimed wins over Gregoire Barrere, Juan Pablo Ficovich, and Jozef Kovalik to enter his maiden main draw at the Melbourne Major. He won 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 against Camilo Carabelli in the opening round following which he had to face fifth seed and last year's runner-up Daniil Medvedev.
Learner Tien stunned the world after taking the opening two sets. However, the marathon man of tennis pulled two sets back to take the game into the deciding set. After some nail-biting moments in the tiebreaker, the 19-year-old defeated Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(4), (8)6-7, 1-6, (10)7-6(7) at 3:00 am in the morning.
During his on-court interview, he thanked his family back home for supporting them from across the world. and sent a loving 'I love you' message. Tien's family is based in California.
"I'm not sure if they're still watching, but if, if they are, I love you guys. Thank you for always supporting me from across the world. I know you guys wish you could be here. I wish you guys could be here too, but it means the world to me that you guys are, you know, trying that hard just to watch me play. So,thank you guys." (at 3:58)
Learner Tien will take on Corentin Moutet in Australian Open 2025 3R
Learner Tien will continue his dream run in Melbourne against Corentin Moutet in the third round, in what will be the maiden meeting between the two men. When asked, during his on-court interview, if he had watched Moutet play, Tien said:
"I have, yeah. I saw a little bit of his first-round match this week, not really thinking about if I can play him in the third round or not. Obviously, I've seen him and I think it'll be a fun match."
The Frenchman has been playing phenomenal tennis so far, kicking off his tournament by taking out the home favorite and 25th seed Alexei Popyrin by turning around a one-set deficit. He replicated his performance against Mitchell Krueger in the following round.
The winner of their match will play either Lorenzo Sonego or Fabian Marozsan in the fourth round.
