Nicolas Jarry recently spoke out about the 'unfair' treatment he faced in handling his doping case compared to that of Jannik Sinner. Jarry tested positive for two banned substances - SARM LGD-4033 (ligandrol) and stanozolol - in November 2019, while Sinner tested positive for clostebol in March 2024 during the Indian Wells Masters.
Despite Jarry and Sinner being found to bear no significant fault or negligence for their doping violations, the Chilean was handed an 11-month ban from the ATP Tour, while Sinner faced no consequences.
In a recent interview with La Tercera, Nicolas Jarry discussed his doping scandal. When asked if he believed he was treated unfairly compared to Jannik Sinner, Jarry expressed that he indeed felt that way given his lengthy suspension while Sinner faced no punishment.
The former World No. 16 also mentioned feeling unsupported during his doping scandal, contrasting it with the support Jannik Sinner received during his ordeal.
“One hundred percent. Unfortunately, I still feel it, I try to work on it, to talk about it, to not let it affect me, but it is something I still can't close. No. I don't think they're tarnishing him, but I would have liked the same support he had when it happened to me. That's something that affects me personally," Jarry said [translated from Spanish].
On the tennis front, Nicolas Jarry kicked off his 2025 season at the Brisbane International. He secured victories over Mariano Navone and qualifier Benjamin Bonzi in the first two rounds before bowing out to eventual champion Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals.
Jarry also teamed up with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard for the doubles event at the ATP 250 hardcourt tournament in Queensland. The duo made it to the semifinals before being defeated by the Czech pair of eventual runners-up Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner will begin his 2025 season at the Australian Open as a defending champion.
Nicolas Jarry on his reaction after learning that he will face Jannik Sinner in Australian Open 2025 1R: “It wasn't positive"
In the same interview, Nicolas Jarry was asked about his reaction upon learning that he had drawn top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open.
Jarry acknowledged that he was not thrilled about facing Sinner in the opening round, as he had hoped for a less challenging opponent.
“The first one… it wasn't positive. You come here wanting to do things well, to win matches, and to get the most difficult one is not ideal, but then my mentality quickly changed to start accepting the situation and motivating myself that it will be a great match," Nicolas Jarry said.
However, the former World No. 16 expressed that he is excited at the prospect of playing against the World No. 1 in the first Grand Slam of the year.
“Playing against the world number one, in the first Grand Slam of the year, in one of the best stadiums in the world is a tremendous experience and I am in a very good position, playing and feeling very good. I feel strong," he added
Jannik Sinner and Nicolas Jarry have met twice before on the ATP Tour, with each player winning a match. Their most recent encounter took place in the first round of the 2024 China Open, which the Italian won.
The winner of the upcoming first-round match between Jarry and Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open will move on to face either Taro Daniel or wild card Tristan Schoolkate in the second round.
