Iga Swiatek was defeated by Yulia Putintseva in the third round at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The Pole was on a 21-match win streak before encountering the loss. She reasoned that her loss was due to not getting enough rest after the French Open, but fans were not on board with the justification.
Swiatek's clay court season schedule was hectic and she won multiple titles, including the Madrid Open, the Italian Open, and the French Open, in a matter of weeks.
Within a few weeks after the Roland Garros, Wimbledon was underway. While most players participated in preparatory tournaments, the Pole avoided competitive matches until the grass-court Major started.
At SW19, the World No. 1 looked promising with two straight-set victories. However, she could not capitalize on the momentum as she lost 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 to Yulia Putintseva in the third round despite being a set up.
During her post-match press conference, Swiatek mentioned that she did not rest enough after the French Open as she continued her off-court duties. Fans felt that she was making excuses and not complimenting her opponent for her fine display. One X (formerly Twitter) posted a clip of her press conference and wrote:
"Allergic to just saying she was outplayed. Is this already on the excuse wheel or shall we add it?"
Some fans claimed Serena Williams would not have been spared for such reasoning.
"They used to crucify Serena for “not properly crediting her opponent” but I bet they make excuses for this one," one fan wrote.
"Bruh if Serena had said this my lord," another fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions to Iga Swiatek's press conference.
"She had a whole month to “recover”. I’m confused," one fan wrote.
"She is honestly the worst…she did nothing after RG…what a Taylor Swift concert that was it... All these excuses to not admitting she just got beat..." another fan wrote.
"I’m surprised this is her reasoning. She skipped all the grass court warm ups.. Next excuse pls," another fan stated.
"She’s such a sore loser lmao... Yulia literally put her in a blender and all she has to say is ohhh I didn’t get enough rest girl bye just go," wrote yet another.
Iga Swiatek found it difficult to adjust from clay court to grass court at Wimbledon
Iga Swiatek believes that it is the transition from clay courts to grass courts where she is faltering. In the press conference after her third-round loss at Wimbledon, the Pole said:
“For me going from this kind of tennis where I felt like I’m playing the best tennis in my life to another surface where I kind of struggle a little bit more, it’s not easy.”
She is a four-time French Open champion, while her best at Wimbledon is a quarterfinal finish achieved last year. She holds a 24-10 record on grass compared to 150-22 on clay. Her lower than 70% win rate at Wimbledon is the worst for her in Grand Slams.
Iga Swiatek will move on to prepare to represent Poland at the upcoming Olympics in Paris. It will be the Pole's second appearance in the sporting event, having lost in the second round of the Tokyo Games.
