Iga Swiatek revealed that she has nothing "specific" planned as a New Year resolution. The Polish tennis star, currently competing at the 2025 United Cup, hopes to continue enjoying tennis as she has been in Sydney.

Poland faced the Czech Republic on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in a Group B clash at the United Cup. Hubert Hurkacz was defeated in the men's singles by Tomas Machac 5-7, 6-3, 4-6. Swiatek was then up against Karolina Muchova in the women's singles.

The duo had gone to three sets in their past two encounters including the 2023 French Open final. Swiatek won both those encounters to hold a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head. The 23-year-old extended her lead in the record by getting the better of the Czech in Sydney 6-3, 6-4.

After the match, when asked about her New Year’s resolutions, Iga Swiatek shared that she had nothing specific in mind. Reflecting on the past few months when she was involved in a failed drug test controversy, she explained:

"Nothing specific honestly. I feel like I can have more distance after what happened to me the last couple of months. I’m gonna try to just enjoy tennis as I did today. It’s not always easy to do that."
"But I feel a lot of positive energy here in Sydney. Thank you for cheering for us," she added.

In August, Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine, with the news becoming public in November. The 23-year-old explained that the result was due to contamination from a non-prescription melatonin sleep aid she used to manage jet lag. The ITIA imposed a one-month ban, which she served before returning to compete at the United Cup.

In the tie against the Czech Republic, Swiatek joined forces with Hurkacz in the mixed doubles match to defeat the team of Muchova and Machac and help Poland advance into the quarterfinals.

Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek defeated the pair of Karolina Muchova and Tomas Machac 7-6(3), 6-3 in one hour and 25 minutes to win the tie 2-1. After the match, Hurkacz praised the WTA World No. 2:

"Iga is just so solid and you really can count on her shots," Hurkacz said.

Both nations were vying for a confirmed quarterfinal spot with the mixed doubles encounter deciding their fates. However, the Czech Republic also qualified as the best runner-up after Australia could not meet the qualification criteria later in the day.

In the quarterfinals in Sydney, Poland will face Great Britain on Thursday, January 2, while the Czechs will take on Italy on Friday, January 3.
