Iga Swiatek apologized to Aryna Sabalenka for accidentally breaking her phone during a practice session ahead of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The rivalry between Swiatek and Sabalenka has been intense this season, with both stars reaching the top of the WTA rankings, though the latter leads the race heading into the year-end tournament.

Swiatek and Sabalenka have faced each other three times this season, with Swiatek winning twice: at the Madrid Open and Italian Open final. Sabalenka won their most recent match in the Cincinnati Open semifinals. Their head-to-head record is now 8-4 in Swiatek's favor.

During their Thursday training session, Swiatek and Sabalenka were seen having a great time together, looking at Sabalenka’s phone when it accidentally fell. Swiatek was captured covering her mouth in shock. After the session, the Pole shared an image of the moment on her Instagram story and humorously apologized for breaking Sabalenka’s phone.

“I’m sorry Aryna Sabalenka,” Iga Swiatek captioned the image along with a laughing emoji.

Sabalenka shared Swiatek's post on her Instagram story, hilariously adding that a new phone would be on its way to her soon.

“Ahaha no worries, new phone coming my way,” she jokingly captioned.

This season, Sabalenka has clinched the Australian Open, Cincinnati Open, US Open, and Wuhan Open titles, while Swiatek has secured titles at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open.

At the 2024 WTA Finals, the singles round robin stage features the top eight players divided into two groups (Purple and Orange) of four. Each player competes in three round robin matches. The top two players from each group will advance to the semifinals, with the winners moving on to the final.

The Purple Group includes Aryna Sabalenka, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Rybakina, and Zheng Qinwen, while the Orange Group features Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Barbora Krejcikova.

Sabalenka will kick off her WTA Finals campaign on Saturday, November 2, against Zheng Qinwen, while Swiatek will begin by facing Krejcikova on Sunday.

In last season's edition, Swiatek defeated Marketa Vondrousova, Coco Gauff, and Ons Jabeur to qualify for the semifinals, where she bested Sabalenka. She then went on to defeat Jessica Pegula in the final with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
