Iga Swiatek and American skier Mikaela Shiffrin recently engaged in a conversation about their sporting life.
Swiatek and Shiffrin, the 2023 Laureus World Sports Award nominees, also discussed how their hectic schedules have prevented them from meeting each other in person. The World No. 1 Pole, however, Swiatek optimistically voiced that they will be crossing paths soon.
“We keep inviting each other and somehow, it’s gonna happen,” Swiatek said during her conversation with Shiffrin on Laureus Sports Instagram live.
Seven-time world champion Shiffrin declared that she will be making it a point to attend Swiatek’s matches in the near future.
“I think I just need to come to one of your matches. Cause’ I am dying to come anyway,” the Alpine skier said.
Swiatek stated that she will be hosting Shiffrin like a family if she is present at her match.
“If you’re gonna come at one of my tournaments, we are going to host you like a family, so come and you’ll see,” she promised.
However, when Shiffrin expressed her dream wish to attend Wimbledon, three-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek hilariously joked about her poor chances of making it past the first week of the grass Slam and asked her to visit the French Open instead, which she won twice.
“I really, really would love to go to Wimbledon. So, that’s my dream,” Shiffrin said.
“But for Wimbledon, if you want to watch me, first week only. Cause’ second week it’s possible that I won’t be there anymore,” Swiatek jokingly responded. “French is more secure, for sure.”
2018 Wimbledon girls’ champion Swiatek’s best result as a pro at the tournament came in 2021 when she reached the fourth round. The following year, she crashed out in the third round, which also ended her century-best 37-match winning streak.
"I can’t wait to watch you in Stuttgart" - Mikaela Shiffrin hints at watching Iga Swiatek at Stuttgart Open
Iga Switaek, who has been recuperating from a rib injury since her semifinal run at Indian Wells, told Mikaela Shiffrin that she will be returning to the WTA tour soon, with her first tournament being on clay at the WTA 500 Stuttgart Open, where she is the defending champion.
“I will be in Germany pretty soon, so. We will be pretty close to each other,” Swiatek said to the skier, who will be in Austria and Norway around that time.
While it remains to be seen if Shiffrin can mark her presence at the event amidst her busy schedule, the two-time Olympic gold medalist expressed her excitement at watching the World No. 1 stage her comeback at the event.
“Hope your recovery continues well and I can’t wait to watch you in Stuttgart, Iga!” Shiffrin wrote in her Instagram post caption.
