Emma Raducanu has revealed she skipped the 2024 French Open to focus on her home Slam Wimbledon (July 1-14). However, her comments have not gone down well with tennis fans around the globe.
Raducanu withdrew from the Roland-Garros qualifying rounds after missing out on automatic entry and a wild card. While many were unsure of her reasoning, she recently told WTA that although she had planned to play in Paris, she eventually decided to skip the tournament because winning it wasn't her primary goal.
"This year, I don't need to rush to try to peak and win the French Open. That wasn't my goal and I have to prioritize where I want to target," she said.
Tennis fans later took to X (Twitter) to share hilarious reactions to Raducanu's comments. One fan sarcastically thanked Raducanu for not participating in Paris and allowing World No. 1 Iga Swiatek to win the tournament.
"Iga was so lucky that @EmmaRaducanu let her win RG this year. Thank you Emma," the fan wrote.
Another fan trolled Raducanu by saying that her win at the 2021 US Open was a "one-in-a-million occasion."
"Funny how she thinks her peaking is a guaranteed slam title. The USO2021 was a one in a million occasion. Wake up hon," the fan wrote.
"To quote John McEnroe 'You cannot be serious.' And she still wonders why people make fun of her?" another posted.
One account expressed doubt that Emma Raducanu would have a successful campaign at Wimbledon, and predicted her exit in the second or third round.
"She will exit Wimby in 2nd round. Like the rest of the British female players...ok maybe 3rd max," they wrote.
"What's more ridiculous is how much media attention she continues to receive without any performances to justify that since her Slam win," one account commented.
"She is a joke I need her to stop getting served wildcards when she clearly does not take tennis seriously," another tweeted.
Emma Raducanu makes a comeback at Nottingham Open
After her early exit from the Madrid Open in April, Emma Raducanu is back in action at the 2024 Nottingham Open.
Raducanu has kicked off her Nottingham campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 win over Ena Shibahara on June 11.
The Brit will next face off against Daria Snigur in the Round of 16. This matchup marks their first meeting on the WTA Tour, so the head-to-head record stands at an even 0-0.
