Iga Swiatek has expressed her views on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) choosing not to appeal her doping case to the Court of Arbitration (CAS). The Pole was satisfied at the issue reaching a head on Monday (January 20) as she could finally focus on her campaign at the 2025 Australian Open.
Swiatek has been in red-hot form in Melbourne during this fortnight. The second seed has not dropped more than four games in a single set in her four victories en route to the quarterfinals. She will next face eighth-seeded Emma Navarro for a place in the last four.
During her press conference following her fourth-round win at the Happy Slam on Monday, Iga Swiatek was asked about her thoughts on WADA making the decision to not challenge the International Tennis Integrity Association's (ITIA) ruling on the Pole's case last year. The 23-year-old was happy to move on from the case as it was just white noise to her pursuit of tennis glory.
"Well, for sure, I'm satisfied that I can get a close, kinda, and I can just move on and finish this whole process because I just want to play tennis and focus on the tournament," Iga Swiatek told the media in Melbourne on Monday. 'So, yeah, I'm just satisfied."
Last October, Iga Swiatek revealed that she had served a provision suspension for 22 days in September-October following the US Open. The then-World No. 1 said in her statement that she had tested positive for the prohibited substance Trimetazidine (TMZ). The ITIA later found the Pole's explanation that she took melatonin that was contaminated with the banned substance to be plausible, choosing to let her play the rest of her 2024 season.
Iga Swiatek looking to reach the semifinals of Australian Open for the second time in her career
Iga Swiatek will be eager to book her place in the last four at the 2025 Australian Open when she takes on eighth seed Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (January 22). The Pole has made six appearances at the Happy Slam since turning pro in 2016, managing to reach the semifinals just once (2022).
After announcing herself at the head of the table by winning her maiden Major title at the 2020 French Open, Swiatek recorded a second-week showing in Melbourne the following year. She then went all the way to the last-four stage in 2022, where Danielle Collins held her off in straight sets.
The five-time Major winner suffered surprise defeats as the top seed at the next two editions of the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024, losing to Elena Rybakina and Linda Noskova, respectively.
