Iga Swiatek's new coach Wim Fissette called the Pole's performance against Daria Kasatkina in the final group stage match of the 2024 WTA Finals as the 'perfect match'. Swiatek defeated Kasatkina 6-1, 6-0 in a lopsided affair.
The 23-year-old had been out of action since the US Open where she made it to the quarterfinals. She missed out on the Asian swing and made some big changes in her team during this period.
On October 4, Swiatek announced that she had parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski, under whom the Pole enjoyed immense success. About two weeks later, she announced that she had joined hands with Wim Fissette, Naomi Osaka's ex-coach.
The duo debuted their partnership at the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh where the Pole got off to a strong start with a win against Barbora Krejcikova but faced defeat to Coco Gauff in the second match. In a must-win match with elimination looming, Swiatek came out guns blazing to defeat Kasatkina, who replaced Jessica Pegula in the WTA Finals.
Speaking about the former World No. 1's performance, Fissette called it a 'perfect match'.
"I think the perfect match from Iga today and yeah, really happy to see her play this level," he said.
He spoke about Swiatek's performances at the WTA Finals this year and said how he was trying to learn from it since he was new to this job.
"Again for me, it's all pretty new so, I had 10 days in Warsaw before coming here then saw a tough match with Krejcikova, then a difficult match against Gauff, and now I saw the perfect match against Kasatkina, so I’m learning a lot."
"You guys give me extra energy to compete" - Iga Swiatek got emotional looking at the support from her fans
During her post-match interview, Iga Swiatek got emotional about the love she received from the crowd in Riyadh at the 2024 WTA Finals. After she thanked the crowd, they started chanting her name. She then thanked her fans for giving her the extra motivation to be at her best.
"As usual. Thank you guys for the support. It means a lot. Any place I go I hear this. You guys give me extra energy to compete. Thank you for being with me,” Iga Swiatek said.
Iga Swiatek, the defending champion at the WTA Finals, is done with her group stage matches at the event. If Barbora Krejcikova loses to Coco Gauff in their match, the Pole will enter the semifinals.
