Emma Raducanu recently took an apparent swipe at Andy Murray's mother Judy in an exchange with Frances Tiafoe. Many have perceived it to stem from Judy's reaction to Raducanu pulling out of the mixed doubles event at this year's Wimbledon Championships, which brought a bizarre end to Murray's career at the prestigious grasscourt Major. However, several fans were not pleased with Raduanu seemingly bringing back the controversy into the limelight.

Murray was forced to pull out of the men's singles event at Wimbledon after being unable to recover from a cyst removal surgery in his back. The former ATP World No. 1 had already announced that this year's Wimbledon would mark his last SW19 outing as player, and his singles withdrawal meant that his final Wimbledon appearance would come in doubles.

Murray and brother Jamie paired up for the men's doubles, but were eliminated in the first round. After the match, Murray received a stirring farewell, but there was optimism surrounding his mixed doubles campaign alongside Raducanu. However, Raducanu ended up withdrawing to prioritize her women's singles campaign, meaning Murray's time at Wimbledon was up.

The former WTA World No. 10's withdrawal sparked a seemingly salty response from Judy, who used the word "astonishing" to describe the situation at the time. Recently, in an Instagram exchange with Frances Tiafoe, Raducanu used the same word when the American seemed to approach her about playing mixed doubles at the ongoing Mubadala Citi DC Open.

Most fans on X (formerly Twitter) turned critical towards the 2021 US Open women's singles champion upon taking notice of her exchange with Tiafoe.

"Just a little immature from Emma there. Showing her age," wrote a fan.
"Just couldn’t let it lie," another fan commented.
"Nobody can say Emma Raducanu doesn’t love the drama and that she brings the criticism upon herself… showing her immaturity and age here again," added another fan.
"Pathetic from Emma. She’s a clown," another fan chimed in.
"This is on Andy Murray. When you select Emma Raducanu as your partner, you have to understand there’s like a 90% chance she’s not going to be in the mood to play or she’ll have a conflicting commitment with her primary career as an social media influencer," yet another fan wrote.

However, there were a few fans who empathized with Raducanu.

"Everyone giving emma abuse for focusing on the singles at Wimbledon when Andy would've done exactly the same thing. Hell, i bet a lot of those people didn't like him for years anyway," a fan wrote.
"You adding two and two and getting about 12 here," commented another fan.
"So she can’t use the word ‘astonishing’ anymore," another fan weighed in.

Murray himself had surprisingly remained silent on the controversy that unfolded surrounding her mother and Raducanu. However, recently, in an interview with the BBC, he opened up on the subject. The former ATP World No. 1 acknowledged that how it all turned out was "strange" but chose to respect Raducanu's decision.

"Athletes are always going to make the decision that’s best for themselves and she obviously had an opportunity to do well in the single. That was the decision she made and I respect that. The ending was a bit strange what happened. But, at the same time when I reflect on it, it was special that I got to finish with my brother," Murray told the BBC.

Murray is currently participating at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the men's doubles event alongside Daniel Evans. The pair has reached the third round after two narrow wins across the first two rounds. Meanwhile, Raducanu has reached the second round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, where she will face Peyton Stearns on Wednesday, July 31.
