Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off his loss at the 2024 US Open as he visited the Italian Grand Prix. Alcaraz was joined by fellow tennis player Matteo Berrettini, who too, got over his early exit at the New York Slam to enjoy his time at his home race.
The Spaniard attended the Italian GP as a guest of the Alpine team, while the former World No. 6 was invited by his sponsor Red Bull. The tennis duo linked up at the race.
Berrettini also took to Instagram to share his experience at the Grand Prix. The Italian posted a video from the Red Bull paddock. He also shared a selfie with Alcaraz.
Red Bull Racing also shared some pictures of the Wimbledon 2021 finalist from the Formula One race.
Matteo Berrettini's presence could not inspire Red Bull Racing as Max Verstappen finished sixth and Sergio Perez ended the race in eighth position. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc earned the victory at the team's home race. McLaren claimed a double podium as Oscar Piastri came second and Lando Norris finished third.
Alcaraz and Berrettini's Italian Grand Prix appearance came on the back of a poor US Open campaign. Alcaraz suffered a surprise defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round at the New York Slam. The Spaniard was completely overpowered by van de Zandschulp as the latter won 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. Berrettini, too, lost in the second round to Taylor Fritz, who played a dominating match to knock out the Wimbledon 2021 finalist. Fritz won 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-1.
Carlos Alcaraz on his early defeat at the 2024 US Open - "It was confusing"
Carlos Alcaraz shared his thoughts about his surprise defeat at the US Open. The Spaniard said that he was at a loss of words to describe his performance.
"I don't know what to say right now," Alcaraz said.
The four-time Grand Slam champion praised his opponent van de Zandschulp for playing 'great' tennis and not making many mistakes.
"He played really good tennis. I thought he was going to give me more points – more free points. He didn’t make a lot of mistakes that I thought he was going to do. So it was confusing a bit," he said.
Alcaraz said that he could not raise his level, adding that his level was not enough to win the match.
"I think my level stayed at the same point the whole match. It wasn’t enough to win the match or to give myself the chance to get into the match or try to give myself chances," he added.
Carlos Alcaraz will next be seen at the 2024 China Open.
