American tennis star Danielle Collins shared a series of memorable moments from her 2024 Paris Olympic journey. Despite facing an untimely retirement in the singles quarterfinals and an early exit in the second round of doubles, Collins' post offered a behind-the-scenes look at the bonds formed off the court.
Collins was part of a strong U.S. women's tennis contingent that included Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro, and Desirae Krawczyk. The men's team, featuring standouts like Taylor Fritz, Chris Eubanks, Marcos Giron, Tommy Paul, Rajeev Ram, and Austin Krajicek, also made a notable impact at the Games.
The American shared a series of pictures on her Instagram on August 6, showcasing her best moments from the event. These included posing in the official US team uniform with her teammates, exploring the Olympic Village, and meeting with American track and field athlete Sha’Carri Richardson.
"The best memories with this group," Collins captioned her post.
Collins had a rollercoaster ride in the singles category where she advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Germany’s Laura Siegemund, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, and Colombia's Camila Osorio in the first three rounds. However, her run was cut short due to an injury during a quarterfinal match against top seed Iga Swiatek, forcing her to retire after a tense exchange with her opponent.
In the doubles event, Collins and her partner, Desirae Krawczyk, were eliminated in the second round by the Ukrainian duo of Lyudmyla and Nadiia Kichenok 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
While the U.S. women's tennis team failed to clinch any medals, the men's team had a more successful run. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul secured a bronze medal in the men's doubles event by defeating the Czech duo of Adam Pavlasek and Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-4, while Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek won silver after losing 7-6 (6), 6-7 (1), 8-10 to the Australian team Matthew Ebden and John Peers.
Danielle Collins and compatriot Marcos Giron humorously discuss being photobombed by Coco Gauff and LeBron James at Paris Olympics
Danielle Collins humorously remarked on a snapshot featuring Coco Gauff and LeBron James, calling it her and compatriot Marcos Giron’s preferred photo despite them only appearing in the backdrop.
Gauff and James served as Team USA's flag bearers and the tennis team spent time with the NBA star before the opening ceremony, capturing some photos. Collins posted one such image to her Instagram story, playfully declaring it her top pick with Marcos Giron, as both athletes were spotted in the background, apparently posing for the shot.
"My favorite photo of me and @mcosgiron," Collins wrote.
Marcos Giron re-posted the story, joining in on the humor by commenting on the difficulty of being recurrently ‘photobombed’ by the duo carrying the flags.
"@danimalcollins Tough constantly getting photobombed by @cocogauff & @kingjames," Giron joked.
Collins then re-shared Giron’s witty retort on her own Instagram story.
While details about Danielle Collins' next tournament remain unclear, Marcos Giron is set to compete in the National Bank Open in Montreal, where he will face Australian James Duckworth in the first round.
