Garbine Muguruza, her husband Arthur Borges, and their new pug puppy rode to Milan to tour the Italian city. The Spanish-Venezualan announced retirement from her sport on April 20, 2024, ending a storied career spanning 12 years.
The former World No. 1, who retired with 10 WTA singles titles, tied the nuptial knot with her long-time boyfriend Arthur Borges on October 5. The couple first met at the 2021 US Open, where Borges wished her luck for the tournament by recognizing her on the street.
Two months into their marital life, Muruguza and Borges set off on a road trip to Milan with their new pug puppy, Gordi. On December 9, the former player shared a picture carousel on her Instagram handle with the caption:
"Road trip to Milan is always a good idea!"
The first picture featured the 31-year-old in front of a giant Christmas tree at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the popular shopping arcade in Milan. The following slide had Borges and Gordi engaging in an adorable moment in a restaurant, followed by a side view of the cathedral Duomo di Milano.
She then posted snaps of her indulging in a spaghetti pasta dish and posing with her pup in her arms. The last picture featured Gordi sleeping inside the car in a cozy bed.
On December 1, Garbine Muguruza posted a photo series to announce the pug's arrival in the couple's lives.
"Say hello to our little baby!! Gordi the pug is finally with us."
Garbine Muguruza won two Grand Slam titles at the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon Championships. Her repertoire also included two Olympic Games appearances at the 2016 Rio and 2021 Tokyo, representing Spain. Muruguza advanced to the final and finished as runners-up in two Grand Slam tournaments, the 2015 Wimbledon and 2020 Australian Open.
Garbine Muguruza on her post-retirement plans - "I just want to do nothing"
Having retired at 30, Garbine Muruguza had talked about getting questions about her post-retirement plans. In an interview with The Telegraph in April, 2024, the former World No. 1 shared that the main goal would be to spend time with her family and get a dog.
"People expect a great answer from me, I’m leaving tennis because I’m going to do this or that, I’m going to go into business, I’m going to develop a cookie – whatever it is. “No. I’m leaving tennis because I’m looking forward to being with my loved ones, making a trip without my tennis rackets, probably building a family, getting a dog. I just want to do nothing."
Garbine Muguruza made her final professional appearance on the tennis court at the 2023 WTA Lyon Open.
