On the tennis front, Zheng reached her first quarterfinal of the 2023 season in just her fourth tournament. The World No. 29 beat Rebecca Marino 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier in the week, before a 7-6(10), 6-1 win over fifth seed Ostapenko.

Earlier, Zheng had a disappointing Australian Open, losing to unseeded Bernarda Pera in the second round after a first-round victory over Dalma Galfi. She suffered from injury issues ahead of the Melbourne Grand Slam, having been forced to retire from her Round of 16 match at the Adelaide International 2 after just one set against Petra Kvitova.

Qinwen Zheng aims to enter the top-10 in the WTA rankings in 2023, sharing her goals for the new season at the start of the year. The 20-year-old recognized that she still has a lot of work ahead of her to be able to get there, but aims to leave no stone unturned in her bid to do so. She plans to approach the target one step at a time.

"In 2023, I wish I can become a top 10 first," Zheng said in a press conference at Adelaide 1 last month. "But it's a long way. I still have a lot to improve, and I want to play match by match, and let's see what happens and when I can get there."

Zheng showed what she is capable of in an impressive 2022 season, during which she reached the fourth round of the French Open with wins over the likes of Simona Halep and Alize Cornet. She lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek but was the only player to take a set off Swiatek throughout the tournament. Soon after Roland Garros, she won her maiden WTA title in Valencia.
