Serena Williams sacrificed her career to expand her family
In 2022, Serena Williams penned a heartfelt article in Vogue, announcing her retirement from tennis. The American shed light on the reason behind this decision.
Williams wrote that she never wanted to choose between having a family and playing tennis. She also talked about the difference between a male and a female athlete, pertaining to having a family.
"Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity," Williams wrote.
Williams also talked about her experience being pregnant for the first time with her daughter Olympia. She wrote that she loved the whole pregnancy journey and worked until the due date.
"Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital—although things got super complicated on the other side. But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give," she wrote.
Serena Williams retired from tennis after the 2022 US Open.
