Stan Wawrinka recently shared his delight in making Switzerland's Olympic team for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. He revisited the Athens 2008 Olympics, where he partnered with Roger Federer and the duo won the gold medal.
Wawrinka is gearing up for his third Olympic event after a hiatus of 12 years. He competed at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 but missed out on Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 due to injuries.
Before beginning his campaign for the 2024 edition of the event, the Swiss revisited the Athens Olympics 2008. He partnered with the 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and won the gold medal in doubles.
"Can’t wait to be part of the @swissteam again at the @Olympics Paris 2024," he wrote.
The duo got off to a solid start at the Athens 2008 Olympics by knocking off Italians Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi in the first round before defeating the Russian pair of Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny.
In the quarterfinals, they got the better of the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. Then the Swiss pair upset the No. 1 seed Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the semifinals.
The finals saw them square against the Swedes Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson. The Swiss duo won the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 before the Swedes counter-attacked by winning the third set in the tiebreak. Wawrinka and Federer then won the fourth set 6-3 to clinch the gold medal.
