Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has voiced her outrage over reports that Utah State University allowed a transgender individual to act as a "Dorm Mom" in an all-women's dormitory. Navratilova called the situation "insanity" and questioned how such a decision could be deemed appropriate.
This controversy stems from a Facebook post by Cheryl Saltzman, a concerned mother whose daughter resides in Utah State University’s all-women’s dorm, Merrill Hall. Saltzman claimed the university permitted a transgender person to live in the dorm as a "Dorm Mom," sparking concerns about the safety and privacy of the female students.
After raising her objections with the university, Saltzman alleged that her daughter was offered alternative housing instead of addressing the broader issue.
Martina Navratilova, a staunch advocate for women’s rights in sports and a vocal critic of transgender participation in women’s competitions, shared her reaction on X (formerly Twitter). Reacting to a repost of Saltzman’s claims, Navratilova wrote:
"And the insanity gets worse… who in their right mind thinks this is ok???"
Martina Navratilova aligns with author J.K. Rowling in opposing transgender inmates in women’s prisons
Martina Navratilova has joined renowned author J.K. Rowling in voicing concerns about the contentious issue of transgender inmates being housed in women’s prisons.
On December 30, 2024, Rowling used X (formerly Twitter) to highlight a New York Post report about a case involving Christopher Scott Williams, a transgender woman accused of sexually assaulting her female cellmate.
The allegations stem from a lawsuit filed by Mozzy Clark, a former inmate at a women’s prison in Washington state. Clark claims that her cellmate, Christopher Scott Williams, subjected her to months of harassment and abuse.
Williams, previously convicted of child molestation and domestic violence as a male, sought and obtained a transfer to the women’s facility after identifying as a transgender woman.
Navratilova, known for her strong stance on transgender inclusion in women’s sports, shared Rowling’s tweet and added her remarks, further amplifying the conversation around the case.
"How many women need to be r*ped and get pregnant before this criminality is abolished? How many???" Navratilova wrote.
The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion has previously supported J.K. Rowling’s steadfast stance against allowing men in women’s spaces during a U.S. political debate surrounding transgender women’s access to women’s restrooms.
In a related development, Navratilova met with Rowling and leading feminist advocates from the non-profit organization "The Lesbian Project" in July 2024. She shared a photo from the meeting on social media, fondly referring to Rowling as "the Queen herself."
