The Australian Open 2025 will begin from Sunday, January 12, and World No. 3 Coco Gauff will be present to fight for the title. The American youngster has been in fine form over the last few months. She wrapped up the 2024 season on a high with titles at the China Open and the WTA Finals.
Gauff has picked up from where she left off this year. She took part in the United Cup for the first time to usher in the 2025 season, and it was a memorable and victorious debut for her. She was the only player to remain unbeaten in her singles and mixed doubles matches throughout the tournament.
Gauff was named the MVP as she led Team USA to victory. She also tallied her second consecutive win over her arch-nemesis Iga Swiatek in the final. While it was only her third win over the Pole in 14 attempts, she's finally starting to make some headway in this rivalry.
Given her current form, Gauff is one of the top favorites to win the Australian Open this year. She won her maiden Major title at the US Open 2023 but was unable to replicate that level of success last year. She did reach a couple of Major semifinals, including in Melbourne, and won her first doubles title at the French Open.
Gauff will now aim to capitalize on her red-hot form to go all the way here as well. She also has a shot at the World No. 1 ranking but must win the title, and hope that her rivals for the top spot, Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, crash out early as well.
Coco Gauff will take on Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open 2025
Coco Gauff will begin her Australian Open 2025 campaign against fellow American Sofia Kenin, who was the champion here half a decade ago. Unfortunately, the latter has ceded her position as one of the top players in the game over the past three years, and has struggled to produce her best on a consistent basis.
Kenin has a 3-2 record this year. She reached the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland, and lost in the quarterfinals of the Hobart International. Gauff, meanwhile, has a 5-0 record in 2025, and has won 18 of her last 20 matches.
The two have faced off thrice in the past, and Kenin leads their head-to-head 2-1. She beat Gauff en route to the Australian Open title in 2020, and the latter avenged that loss three years later en route to winning the ASB Classic.
Kenin got the upper hand when they met at Wimbledon 2023, and stunned Gauff in three sets in the first round. It was a surprising result considering her struggles that year. Despite her opponent's inconsistent form, the World No. 3 will be cautious, and won't let her guard down.
Gauff's best result at the Australian Open was a semifinal finish, which she achieved just last year. She went down to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. The 20-year-old could meet her once again at the same stage this year, and will be prepared for her this time having won their most recent encounter at the WTA Finals 2024.
