Barbora Krejcikova’s Wimbledon triumph has impressed many from the tennis fraternity and Andrea Petkovic has become the latest to heap praise on the Czech star. The 28-year-old got the better of Jasmine Paolini in the women's singles final for her second Grand Slam title.
Dubbing her win a “poetic justice”, Petkovic said that an understated player had won in a country synonymous with understatement before highlighting the Czech star’s impressive performances.
The former pro added that Krejcikova’s game stands out for her exquisite technique, which she thought was possibly the best out there.
"It’s poetic justice that an understated personality like Barbora should win in the country of understatement," Andrea Petkovic said. "Her tennis is beautiful."
"A study of the game like no other – you see her regularly in the stands for all kinds of matches – she might have the most beautiful technique of all."
Elaborating, Petkovic stated that Krejcikova swings her arm effortlessly and always finds the best contact point with the ball. She went on to praise the Czech star’s anticipation and wit, saying it helps her make up for any shortcomings in her footspeed.
"Everything seems to flow effortlessly. Her swings are easy and complete, the elbow the exact right distance from her body, the hit point in front of her, the eye impeccable. What she may lack in quickness, she makes up for in anticipation and wits," Andrea Petkovic said.
"Barbora Krejcikova snuck through a draw plastered with obstacles" - Andrea Petkovic on Czech's Wimbledon run
Andrea Petkovic also gave her thoughts on Barbora Krejcikova’s run at Wimbledon, hailing her for overcoming a series of problems in every round.
She noted that the Czech was not being viewed as a serious contender despite having won a Grand Slam in the past. Her wins over the likes of Danielle Collins and Jelena Ostapenko, she said, should have sent the message across.
"Barbora Krejcikova... snuck through a draw plastered with obstacles until the very moment she beat the heavy favourite Elena Rybakina in the semifinals," Andrea Petkovic said.
"Despite Barbora being a former singles major champion (among her ten other doubles and mixed major titles), despite her beating Danielle Collins and Jelena Ostapenko on Court 1 in impressive performances, people only realized she could win it all when she was serving for the match against Rybakina in the third set at 40-0 and 5-4 in the semifinal," she added.
Besides Collins and Ostapenko, Krejikova beat former champion Elena Rybakina and French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini en-route to her maiden Wimbledon title.
