Tennis fans were taken by surprise as Katerina Siniakova kissed her mixed doubles partner, Tomas Machac, after clinching gold at the Paris Olympics. Just days before their triumph, the Czech players announced their breakup.

Machac and Siniakova, a nine-time women’s doubles Grand Slam champion, made their relationship public in 2021. The couple often supported each other during their matches, with Katerina Siniakova most recently pictured in the stands during Tomas Machac’s third-round loss to Daniil Medvedev in June.

However, following her doubles title run with Barbora Krejcikova at the Prague Open last week, the former World No. 1 revealed that she and Machac had broken up. Despite the personal separation, she confirmed their Paris Olympics quest for gold.

"Yes, it's true, but this is my private matter," the Tokyo Olympics women’s doubles gold medalist told Blesk.cz.

"Of course we will play, we are professionals after all," she added about her Paris campaign.

True to her word, Katerina Siniakova rose to glory with Tomas Machac at the Olympics. The duo beat China’s Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu on Friday, August 2, to clinch the gold. Siniakova and Machac shared an affectionate kiss on the lips to celebrate their triumph, much to the tennis fans’ surprise. The pair’s jubilance was visible as they stood on the podium to accept their medals.

"Yep, Machac and Siniakova are definitely broken up," tennis writer Bastien Fachan teasingly wrote on X.

"Normalize winning Olympic gold to rekindle your relationship's spark," he added.

"She said ‘you’ve got to help me win the Olympic gold medal to win me back’ and he delivered," another fan joked.

"It's so poetic if they really had broken up and these last days of winning and getting the gold eventually brought them back together," one fan said.

Several fans demanded a sports rom-com movie based on the pair’s journey.

"Welcome back Tashi Duncan et Patrick Zweig," one fan said, referencing Zendaya’s recent movie ‘Challengers.’

"Netflix or Hallmark needs to make a movie about their story!" one fan said.

"Hollywood, if you know what's good for you.... you won't find a better plot line for a sports romcom," another fan wrote.

"Someone needs to write this sports rom-com ASAP — two professional tennis players who break up after multiple years of dating, only to reunite weeks later to win gold at the Olympics. It’s cinematic gold," another fan chimed in.

When asked about their relationship status following their Paris Olympics victory, Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac were discreet in their responses.

"That's our personal life, so you don't need to know that," Siniakova told reporters, smiling.

"We like when you are confused," the 28-year-old added.

Chiming in, Tomas Machac said.

"This is top secret," the 23-year-old joked.

Machac and Siniakova participated in all three categories—singles, doubles, and mixed doubles—at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While the latter made it as far as the second round in singles, Siniakova fell in her first hurdle.

In women’s doubles, Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova, who were the defending champions, suffered a shock defeat to Russia’s Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals. Machac, meanwhile, is set to contest the bronze medal match with partner Adam Pavlasek. They face Americans Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz on Saturday.
