Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune will lock horns in the men's singles final at the Italian Open. It will be the second meeting between the two, with Rune winning their previous encounter 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters this season.

Daniil Medvedev entered the Italian Open seeded third, thus receiving a bye to the second round of the tournament. Here, he beat Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4, 6-2 before coming back from a set down to defeat 31st seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the fourth round.

The Russian triumphed 6-2, 7-6(3) over 19th seed Alexander Zverev to reach the quarterfinals where he beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2 to set up a semifinal clash against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Daniil Medvedev defeated the Greek 7-5, 7-5 to reach the final of a Masters 1000 event on clay for the first time in his career.

Holger Rune entered the Italian Open as the seventh seed and started the tournament by beating Arthur Fils 6-3, 6-3. He then triumphed 6-4, 6-2 over Fabio Fognini before defeating Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

Here, the Dane faced reigning champion Novak Djokovic and beat him 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to set up a semifinal clash against fourth seed Casper Ruud. He came back from a set down to beat the Norwegian 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 to reach his second Masters 1000 final of the season.

Rune might have the edge entering the match considering his clay-court prowess and the fact that he beat Medvedev in Monte-Carlo. However, the Russian has looked in very good form lately and is capable of coming out on top.
