The women's singles event of the 2023 Italian Open came to a close on Saturday with Elena Rybakina claiming the title over Anhelina Kalinina in the final.
The match was delayed for quite a bit due to torrential downpour, but once the play finally commenced, Rybakina was off to a fast start. Although she bagged the opening set, the contest eventually ended in an anti-climatic manner. Kalinina was forced to retire due to an injury in the second set, sealing a win for the Kazakh.
This marked the third time that Rybakina benefitted from a mid-match retirement in Rome. Anna Kalinskaya and Iga Swiatek were also unable to continue their matches against the 23-year-old due to injuries in the third round and the quarterfinals, respectively.
With the win, Rybakina secured her second title of the season, following her earlier triumph at the BNP Paribas Open. She will rise to a new career high of World No. 4 when the WTA rankings are released on Monday.
Rybakina's title-winning run at the Italian Open fetched her a sum of €521,754 in prize money. Runner-up Anhelina Kalinina, on the other hand, received €272,200 for her efforts. The amount is half of what is earned by the men's finalists, who earn €1,105,265 and €580,000 as the winner and runner-up, respectively.
Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter, meanwhile, won the Italian Open women's doubles title and got €182,170 as a reward for it. They defeated Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in straight sets to win their first WTA 1000 title as a team. The American duo earned €96,430 for making it to the final.

Elena Rybakina's stellar results this season have pushed her atop the prize money leaderboard. Her triumph at the BNP Paribas Open added $1,262,220 to her kitty, while she received cheques worth $662,360 and $1,977,437 for her runner-up finishes at the Miami Open and the Australian Open, respectively.
Coupled with Rybakina's latest earning from her Italian Open run, along with her other tour level results, she has earned upwards of $4.5 million this year. She has already eclipsed her annual earnings from past seasons by performing so well this year.
If Rybakina mantains her level until the end of the season, she has a good shot at crossing the $10-million mark at the very least. Serena Williams owns the record for the highest prize money earned over a single season, raking in over $12 million back in 2013.
Williams is also the all-time prize money leader on the women's tour, having earned more than $94 million over the course of her career. She is followed by sister Venus Williams and Simona Halep, who have collected over $42 million and $40 million, respectively.
