Fans are furious at Jack Draper and Felix Auger-Aliassime's controversial ending to their third-round match at the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Draper seemingly shanked the ball at match point but said that he wasn't sure. However, Aliassime had a long heated discussion with chair umpire Greg Allensworth to overturn the decision but to no avail.
Draper and Aliasimme engaged in a grueling three-set thriller which the Brit won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. However, the match point that gave him the win led to a huge argument between the Canadian and the umpire. Aliasimme was confident that Draper had shanked his volley, but the Brit was unaware and even asked for a replay.
The Canadian said that it wasn't the player's responsibility but the umpire's to make such call. After a long conversation among the men involved, Allensworth said that he felt Draper's shot was clean and the match controversially ended in his favor.
Fans felt that Jack Draper feigned innocence and took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their dismay. One fan called the Brit a cheater, adding:
"Draper is a cheater lmao every tennis player would know the feel."
Another fan said how the Brit should apologize to Aliassime and give him his prize money for the 'scummy' move he pulled:
"Jack Draper should give Felix his prize money and a MAJOR apology. Scummy move there."
Here are some other reactions from the fans.
"There’s no fu**ing way Draper didn’t knew. Everyone who’s played tennis knows exactly what I mean," a fan opined.
"Felix Auger Aliassime knew it was a double hit immediately. Draper knew it, but lied. Millions of viewers knew it. The umpire claimed not to know it," a fan said.
"Robbed. Yes, shame on draper and the referee," another fan said.
"Draper is lying and the club house will treat him accordingly. Every player knows whether they make a clean shot or “flub” it," a fan felt
Allensworth was involved in another huge controversy during Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima's match in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open when that was hit long wasn't called out. This angered Fritz who questioned the use of electronic line calling, but the point ended up being replayed.
