Jannik Sinner has admitted to being a bit unwell when he woke up ahead of his clash against Daniil Medvedev in the Miami Open final.

Medvedev continued his fine form as he beat the Italian 7-5, 6-3 to win his fourth ATP singles title of the season. Playing his fifth final of the 2023 season, Medvedev has won 24 matches while losing just one in his last five tournaments.

Sunday's final in Florida was Medvedev and Sinner's second face-off in a final this year. In their first meeting of the season, at Rotterdam, the Russian prevailed over Sinner in three sets.

Speaking to the media after his loss, Jannik Sinner revealed that he was feeling a little sick on Sunday morning. He also thanked his team and the fans for their unconditional support.

"Obviously, thanks to my team. We woke up this morning, not at my best. I felt a little bit sick, but thanks everyone for the support. It means a lot to me. You gave me a lot of energy," Sinner said.

The 21-year-old also touched upon his 2021 loss to Hubert Hurkacz in the final and expressed hopes of winning the title some day in the future.

"Unfortunately, today, I couldn't play at my best, but I still thank you so much and see you guys next year," he said. "Thanks to everyone who made this tournament very special. And two years ago, I played in the final, didn't win this year, but hopefully one time I can take this one home. So thank you so much, that's it."

How has Jannik Sinner fared in 2023 so far?

Jannik Sinner has had an impressive 2023 season so far. The Italian lost in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but followed it up with a sensational run at the Montpellier Open. Sinner did not drop a single set and won the title by beating Maxime Cressy in the final.

The 21-year-old recreated that form during the Rotterdam Open too. He beat the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Stefanos Tsitsipas to set up a clash with Medvedev in the final, where he came up just short.

At the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. But he got some measure of revenge when he beat the Spaniard in the semifinals of the Miami Open.

Sinner, a former French Open quarterfinalist, will kick off his clay court swing with the Monte-Carlo Masters in Monaco. Last year he lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
