Jannik Sinner's comprehensive win in the final of the 2024 US Open has prompted fans to predict a dominant future for the Italian and his rival Carlos Alcaraz. The friendly rivals have shared the spoils across the Majors this year, with Sinner winning the Australian Open and US Open titles, and Alcaraz clinching the French Open and Wimbledon Championships titles.
Sinner's maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open came after he came back from two sets to defeat Daniil Medvedev in the final.
However, the Italian's 2024 US Open title triumph was a lot more straightforward, as he dominated home favorite Taylor Fritz to come out on top with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win on Sunday, September 8. For the most part, Sinner's heavy hitting and resolute defending proved to be Fritz's undoing. The American himself made critical errors at crucial moments as well.
Several fans suggested that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominating the 2024 Majors was a surefire sign of the new-age rivals leading the men's tennis field in the future.
"Sinner -Alcaraz -Alcaraz- Sinner, Yeah this is how I expect the next few years to go as well," a fan wrote.
"So who's gonna stop Sinner and Alcaraz from winning 90% of the next slams?" asked one fan.
"Welcome, Sincaraz era," another chimed in.
There were others who bemoaned the nature of the men's singles final at Flushing Meadows this year. According to these fans, Taylor Fritz simply wasn't good enough to seriously test Jannik Sinner.
"Well... that was definitely a final that happened. it sucks how painfully predictable this match was," wrote one fan.
"The worst part is that Fritz wasn’t a good enough opponent to force Sinner to play at that top masterclass level he has in him. Fritz was just so clearly inferior that Sinner just cruised to the win and inevitably won all three sets with no suspense and playing his 80%," another weighed in.
"Taylor man… those last 4 games were just brutal, nerves really got to him," added yet another fan.
Despite Sinner and Alcaraz's Grand Slam dominance this year, the Italian has arguably been far more consistent and as a result, finds himself well ahead of his Spanish rival in the ATP Tour rankings.
Jannik Sinner has raced away from Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Tour rankings
Carlos Alcaraz's 2024 successes have come in fits and starts. The Spaniard initially struggled to play at his best at the beginning of the year, but managed to successfully defend his BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) title. Alcaraz's was at his electrifying best across the French Open and Wimbledon Championships, winning both Grand Slams to take his Major title haul to four.
The US Open Series though, turned out to be a nightmare for the World No. 3, as he was ousted early from both the Cincinnati Open and more recently, the US Open.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner's consistency has seen him muster deep runs at all four Majors and win two of them. The Italian also came into the US Open on the back of winning the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati Open title. Sinner has also won this year's ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam (ATP 500), Miami Open (ATP Masters 1000), and Halle Open (ATP 500) titles.
As a result of these contrasting patches of form, Sinner finds himself at the summit of the ATP Tour rankings with 11180 points, a comfortable 4490 points ahead of Alcaraz.
