Jannik Sinner is training in Monte-Carlo seemingly in preparation to take part in the 2024 French Open. Sinner suffered a hip injury that kept him out of his home tournament in Rome but the Italian is getting back to full fitness in time for the clay-court Grand Slam.
In Paris, Sinner will be on the lookout for his second Grand Slam title of the year. The 22-year-old had a great start to 2024 as he bagged his first-ever Major title by winning the Australian Open. He was two sets down against Daniil Medvedev in his maiden Major final but came back from the dead to earn the title.
He continued his form and won the Rotterdam Open soon after. Sinner completed his hard-court season with his second-ever ATP 1000 title in Miami.
To begin his clay court season, Sinner played in the Monte-Carlo Masters and reached the semifinal where he lost against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Next, he played in Madrid and reached the quarterfinal of the Madrid Open before suffering a hip injury that forced him to withdraw. His Italian Open withdrawal followed soon after.
“After speaking again with the doctors and specialists about my hip problems I have to announce that unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome,” the World No. 2 wrote on X.
During a press conference at the Italian Open, Sinner declared he would not risk playing the Roland Garros at anything less than 100% fitness. However, the Italian's latest post on social media announced either an intent to play in Paris or that he is in France.
He uploaded two pictures of his training in Monte-Carlo and captioned it with an hourglass and French flag emojis. It could mean him indicating his impending French Open participation or he could have used the French flag because he is in France. Sinner was being coached by Simone Vagnozzi and Umberto Ferrara.
Jannik Sinner's coach Darren Cahill dropped a subtle hint about Italian's French Open 2024 participation
Jannik Sinner's coach Darren Cahill uploaded an image on his Instagram giving a subtle hint about the Italian's upcoming endeavors. Cahill uploaded an image of a tennis racquet holding 'ROLAND GARROS 2024' balls. He captioned the image:
"Terre battue." (Which means 'clay court' in French)
If Sinner does take part in the 2024 French Open, it will be his fifth appearance. His first French Open appearance in 2020 when he reached the quarterfinal stage remains his best.
In 2021 and 2022, Jannik Sinner reached the fourth round and last year he was ousted in the second round by German player Daniel Altmaier 7-6, 6-7, 6-1, 6-7 5-7.
