Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open title on Sunday as he beat second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets for his career’s third Grand Slam trophy. The Italian was gracious in his victory as he consoled Zverev with a heartfelt speech.
Sinner, the reigning champion and top seed, clinched a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Zverev to become the youngest male player to win back-to-back Australian Open titles since Jim Courier in 1992-93.
The Italian superstar played a near-perfect Australian Open campaign, dropping just two sets throughout the tournament. He accounted for some of the best in the business including 13th seed Holger Rune and local hope Alex De Minaur before getting the better of Alexander Zverev in the summit clash.
It was the third time the German had lost in the final of a Grand Slam (US Open 2020, French Open 2024), and Sinner praised him before reassuring him that he would win a Major soon.
"First of all, I would like to start with Sasha. Again, a tough day for you, and then not only (you), I mean your whole team, your family, you have an incredible team behind you. You're an amazing player. Keep believing in yourself because I think, we all players, and not only all the coaches, whoever is involved in the sport knows how strong you are. Not only as a player but also as a person,” said Jannik Sinner in his on-court interview.
The two-time Australian Open champion continued:
“So keep it up. Keep working hard because we all believe that you can lift one of these very, very soon. So wish you only the best."
His Australian Open triumph will further consolidate Sinner’s position as the World No. 1. As per the ATP website, Jannik Sinner now has 11,830 live points while Zverev has 8,135 live points to his name.
Jannik Sinner continues his sublime form by winning Australian Open
Sinner, 23, has been the most consistent player on the men’s circuit since the start of 2024. He began the year by upsetting Novak Djokovic to the 2024 Australian Open crown and followed that up by reaching the semifinals of the French Open.
The Italian would go on to win his career’s second Major by reigning supreme at the US Open, only to make history in 2025 by becoming the youngest since Jim Courier to retain his Australian Open trophy. He is also the youngest ever to reach successive finals at the Melbourne Major.
Such has been Sinner’s stunning run that he has now won three out of the last five Grand Slams and is currently riding on a staggering 21-match unbeaten run, which includes titles at the Shanghai Masters and the ATP Finals.
Another testament to how clinical Jannik Sinner has been is the fact that he has a perfect record in Grand Slam finals, winning on each of the three occasions he has made it to the title clash of a Major (Australian Open 2024, 2025 and US Open 2024).
