Top seed Jannik Sinner will take on home favorite Tommy Paul in the fourth round of the US Open 2024 on Monday, September 2. The Italian is now the leading favorite to win the title following the early exits of his rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Sinner commenced his quest for a second Major title with a four-set win over Mackenzie McDonald. He ousted another American, Alex Michelsen, in straight sets in the next round, and comfortably beat Christopher O'Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the third round.
Sinner will now aim to reach the quarterfinals of all Majors in a single season for the first time in his career. He's also eyeing to match his career best result at the US Open by making the last eight. He previously reached his only quarterfinal in New York in 2022 and lost to Alcaraz despite having a match point.
Paul needed four sets to down Lorenzo Sonego in his opener and led Max Purcell 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 when the latter retired. He rallied from a set down to defeat Gabriel Diallo 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the third round. He has advanced to the fourth round here for the second straight year, his best showing in New York as well.
This rivalry leans 2-1 in Sinner's favor at the moment, and he won their previous meeting at last year's Canadian Open in straight sets. This will be their first-ever encounter at a Major, and with a spot in the quarterfinal up for grabs, it's guaranteed to be a thriller.
With that in mind, here are all the details about their upcoming showdown:
