Tennis fans online have largely agreed with Caroline Wozniacki's comments about Serena Williams' chances against the players in the current WTA Top 10.
Having announced her retirement in 2020, Wozniacki made a comeback in August last year. She took part in the North American hardcourt swing, reaching the Round of 16 at the US Open.
This year, the Dane began her season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where she lost in straight sets to Elina Svitolina in the opening round. Ahead of the 2024 Australian Open, she interacted with the press during which she touched upon a host of topics.
When asked to compare the current top-ranked players to those half a decade ago, Wozniacki stated that it was not easy to do so. She did, however, state that a player like Williams, on her best day, could easily take down anyone from the younger generation.
"I think it's hard to - I don't know - compare the old top 10 with the new top 10. Obviously, a few of the players that are in the top 10 now or top of the game were playing when the old top 10 was there," she said.
I mean, you can't really compare someone to Serena, in my opinion. I think when Serena was on, when she was playing her best tennis, I don't think anyone here would be able to beat her. I'm saying that with having played basically anyone on tour," she added.
Reacting to Wozniacki's statements, fans on social media largely agreed with her sentiments. One fan stated that most of the current top-ranked players would not be able to beat Williams even if she wasn't at her best.
"Most of them can’t even beat her at her worst," said one fan.
Another fan stated that none of the current crop of players are as fun to watch as Williams.
"Not a big fan of Serena but Wozniacki is quite right, for a start none of today's players, fun to watch as they are, have as good a serve as Serena and they just don't have her all court game, they're all baseliners and pretty average at the net," read another post on X (formerly Twitter).
Another fan noted how Jelena Ostapenko, who has a 4-0 head-to-head record against Iga Swiatek, dominates the current World No. 1, and wrote:
"Absolutely correct. [Jelena] Ostapenko dominates [Iga] Swiatek. Just think what Serena [Williams] would do.

With 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the bag, Serena Williams is widely considered one of the best players the women's tour has ever seen. The retired American great, however, always had her eyes on equalling Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Majors.
Williams was eight weeks pregnant when she clinched the 2017 Australian Open title. Later, she announced that she was taking a maternity leave. After giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, in September of that year, she made her WTA tour comeback.
The 42-year-old came close to a 24th Slam title four times, finishing as the runner-up at the Wimbledon Championships (2018 and 2019) and the US Open (2018 and 2019).
Former World No. 1 Kim Clijsters, in a recent interview, stated that Williams does not get enough credit for everything she achieved after returning to action following the birth of her first child.
"I feel like a lot of times Serena Williams didn’t get enough credit for being in all those grand slam finals after having her daughter," she told The Telegraph.
