Naomi Osaka was denied a point during her first-round match against Caroline Garcia at the 2025 Australian Open. The incident, involving the new Hawk-Eye technology, has led to widespread criticism, with many questioning the accuracy and reliability of the system yet again.

After the Auckland heartbreak, where she reached the final but had to withdraw after winning the first set, Osaka came to Melbourne with hopes of reclaiming her Grand Slam glory. She faced familiar opponent Garcia on Monday, January 13.

The Japanese started strong, taking the first set comfortably, but began facing difficulties with her serve in the second. Frustration mounted when she contested a controversial call from Hawk-Eye Live, as she believed a ball hit by Garcia was out, but the umpire ruled it in.

Despite Naomi Osaka eventually securing a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win, tennis fans were still upset by the controversial decision. One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote:

"It was sooo bad. Players will lose trust in the system if they haven't already."

Another user brought up Jelena Ostapenko, who has always been vocal against electronic line calling, writing:

"Ostapenko isn’t shocked at all, she tried to warn us."
"Defo a bit dodgy at this tournament. I’d be convinced this isn’t the only one that’s been called wrong," another joined.

One account posted:

"Have (or will) the AO address this? Quite shocking indeed."
"I was 90% certain this new Hawk-eye competitor they're using this year is making subjective calls (calls out by ≤ 3mm, which used to be the known margin of error) and calling them in to reward the player taking the risk (!?!) and this just proves it," another tweeted.

One account shared:

"Bring back the line judges and the drama that comes with them!!!"

Naomi Osaka will face Karolina Muchova in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open. The former is a two-time champion in Melbourne, having reigned supreme in 2019 and then again in 2021.

Unlike Osaka, Muchova had little trouble in her first-round match, easily defeating Argentina's Nadia Podoroska with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. She is now eyeing her maiden Major title here.

The two have faced off three times on the court, with Muchova leading the head-to-head 2-1. The Czech won their encounters at the 2021 Madrid Open and the 2024 US Open, while the Japanese had the last laugh in their 2020 Cincinnati Open match.
