Jessica Pegula extended heartfelt wishes to the Buffalo Bills for becoming the AFC East Division champions for a franchise record-fifth consecutive season. Owned by her father and $7.6 Billion-worth business mogul Terry Pegula (as per Forbes) and her mother Kim Pegula, the National Football League team will now head to the NFL Playoffs.
After a disappointing stint at the WTA Finals due to a knee injury, Pegula took to her Instagram story to shift her focus to football. She lauded the Buffalo Bills on their AFC East Championship title win for the fifth consecutive year. The Bills won 35-10 as their opponents, the San Francisco 49ers, dropped to 5-7.
In another Instagram story, the Grand Slam finalist shared a snap of herself on a snowy day in New York, celebrating her home team's monumental win.
"Celebrating @bufflalobills AFC East champs in NYC this morning," her caption read.
The Buffalo Bills alongside the Minnesota Vikings are the only teams to reach the Super Bowl four times but never win a title.
Pegula, who reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2021, 2022, and 2023, kicked off her 2024 season with the Australian Open but withdrew from a couple of tournaments due to neck and back injuries. The American defended her title at the Canadian Open but lost to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of the Cincinnati Open.
At the US Open, she reached her first Grand Slam semi-final by defeating Pole player Iga Swiatek and advanced to her first finals, outpacing Karolína Muchová. However, she faced defeat by Sabalenka and ended her run for the title.
Jessica Pegula explains the reason behind her WTA Finals withdrawal
Pegula, who joined the Orange Group at the WTA Finals, first faced defeat by Coco, recording her first loss to an American after maintaining a 14-match win streak. She next went head-on with Barbora Krejcikova and lost 6-3, 6-3, putting an ending to making out of the group stage matches.
Before her final match against Iga Swiatek, a health setback forced her to withdraw and also prompted her to pen a farewell note for Riyadh.
"What started as a really small issue flared over the last two matches and I just can’t continue tomorrow. I’m sorry to the fans and tournament. I really had a great week of prep and had high hopes here but it just wasn’t meant to be. Thank you for the warm welcome Riyadh," her X caption read.
Jessica Pegula has two quarterfinal appearances at the 2022 French Open and the 2023 Wimbledon in her repertoire.
