Cincinnati Open semifinalists Jessica Pegula and Paula Badosa find themselves in the middle of a very successful US Open series. Both women have already lifted titles in recent weeks and are one step away from another big final.
Pegula is on an incredible eight-match winning streak, one that has seen her successfully defend her title at the Canadian Open last week.
The American beat the likes of Karolina Pliskova, Amanda Anisimova, Diana Shnaider, and Ashlyn Krueger en route to the WTA 1000 crown in Toronto. She has carried the momentum into this week’s Cincinnati Open as well.
Having opened her campaign with a tough three-set win over Karolina Muchova, Pegula took out Taylor Townsend to make the quarterfinals. She was tested again by Leylah Fernandez, but prevailed in a marathon 7-5, 6-7(1), 7-6(3).
Badosa, meanwhile, lifted her first Tour-level trophy in over two years at the Citi Open at the start of the US Open series.
The Spaniard is on a comeback trail from a series of injuries. She was at her vintage best in Washington, getting the better of Sofia Kenin, Liudmila Samsonova Emma Raducanu, and Marie Bouzkova en route to the title.
Badosa also competed at the Canadian Open but came up short against the explosive hitting of Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
Here in Cincinnati, she has found her form again and has made the semifinals without dropping a single set. She has beaten Peyton Stearns, Anna Kalinskaya, Yulia Putintseva, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her four matches so far.
Pegula and Badosa will now step out onto Center Court on Saturday, looking to book a spot in the Cincinnati Open final.
