There are a couple of Australian Open storylines that have come to the forefront in recent days. One of the most talked about things is how Novak Djokovic will fare in light of how last year went.
Last year, the Serb played decently until he faced Jannik Sinner, who bested him in four sets to secure the final. The Italian would ultimately win the trophy while Djokovic would miss out on a Grand Slam trophy in 2024. It's a new year, Djokovic is back Down Under, and many wonder whether he will find his old form.
The draw wasn't kind, placing a couple of big names in his quarter, and lots have completely thrown out the possibility of Djokovic winning. That's not the case with others, who have spoken about the upcoming Australian Open.
"Everybody is almost pushing Djokovic aside at the moment, aren't they? It's Alcaraz and Sinner, and maybe they are looking at some of these other young guys. I don't think I'm ready to toss him aside yet," Jimmy Connors on his Advantage Connors podcast. (27:10)
Connors is not the only one who wouldn't pick against Djokovic, as former player Sam Querrey is also a believer that the Serb could return to form in Australia. There is logical thinking behind that because he won the event ten times, the most out of any player. If there was one place where he would likely turn things around, then it's probably in Australia.
"One more in you" - Connors thinks Djokovic can win Australian Open
In the same episode of his podcast, Connors hypothesized about how the 2025 Australian Open might go. As many have noted, Novak Djokovic feels really comfortable Down Under. It's been the case since the start of his career, and he spoke about it often.
The results speak for themselves, and Connors thinks that all of that matters. In the right circumstances, Djokovic could win it.
"Obviously he feels comfortable down there. If he goes in and he feels his game is in order, that he is ready to play physically and mentally, I'm not ready to toss him aside yet. A lot of guys are saying he's 37 or whatever. His time is over. Somebody is telling him you got one more in you," Connors on the Advantage Connors podcast. (27:38)
Motivation is another factor, and judging by how Djokovic has spoken so far this year, it seems like he doesn't lack it. After a disappointing 2024 season, he's very eager to prove himself once more.
