Kate Middleton has decided not to do the trophy presentation on Saturday during the 2024 Wimbledon women's final, but will reportedly be in attendance at the men's final on Sunday. The news comes amid Middleton's cancer battle, as the Princess of Wales was diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer earlier this year and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
The former Duchess of Cambridge has been a staple at Wimbledon in recent years, and has often been the one handing over the trophy to the winner at SW19. Last year, for instance, there was a heartwarming moment between her and runner-up Ons Jabeur, as Middleton consoled the Tunisian after she broke into tears after the loss.
This year, however, Middleton opting out of the women's final but still choosing to attend the men's final has not gone over well with fans on social media. Many were of the opinion that the optics of the decision did not look good, presenting the image that Middleton and her husband Prince William did not want to support women's matches.
Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment and anger, with one fan wondering why Middleton did not want to have the chance to watch 'amazing' women play tennis at the highest level.
"She’ll never miss an opportunity to be around men who will give her attention. Watching amazing women play tennis? Powerful, strong self made women? Naaa. That’s not her vibe. That threatens her which is why she abused Meghan," one fan said.
"Guess the ladies’ final just didn't make the cut," another wrote.
"I don't know how they would possibly have given out the trophies without her - it's a specific skill only she has & there's absolutely no one else in all of London that could hand out trophies..." one fan commented sarcastically.
Others were even disappointed that Kate Middleton's first major public appearance since her cancer diagnosis was coming at Wimbledon instead of going to a cancer charity or other charities that could use the publicity.
"It's not cool to do the men's but not the women's. It's not cool that the tennis and pomp events are getting attention that cancer charities or her own charities could get if Kate was as visible for those (we don't know what she's doing behind the scenes). The optics are so [thumbs down]," one fan said.
"Kate and her husband always treat women as low grade citizens or something. The way her husband and his family treat her. They always choose to support men," another tweeted.
"So she can attend the men's final but not the Women's. Even if her health is in question she should have shown support for the women's game. Not a women's woman out Kate," one fan wrote.
Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini duel it out in Wimbledon final amid Kate Middleton's absence
What Kate Middleton missed out on Saturday was the chance to see Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini duel it out in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Like Krejcikova, it was Paolini's first at SW19 and second Major final.
Regardless of who wins, Wimbledon is assured of a new women's champion on Saturday. Krejcikova is on the hunt for her second Slam title (following the 2021 French Open), while Paolini is aiming for her first.
On the other hand, the men's final will be a repeat of last year's summit clash, with Carlos Alcaraz locking horns with Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
