Katie Boulter will take on Iga Swiatek in the United Cup quarterfinal tie between Great Britain and Poland. Both teams have topped their respective groups and will be gunning for a semifinal spot.
The Brit was a bit of a favorite heading into both her round-robin contests, but up against the World No. 2, she will be a heavy underdog.
Speaking to the media during her post-match press conference, Boulter discussed the prospect of playing Swiatek this early in the season. She heaped praise on her opponent, dubbing her a “champion” who brings intensity to each point.
The Brit said she was hoping to bring her best tennis to the court and looking forward to the battle. The lack of pressure that comes with being the underdog, she said, would help her enjoy the moment more.
"I know what a champion [Iga Swiatek] is," Katie Boulter said. "I know she's going to bring full intensity every single ball, and I'm not going to get away with anything. So I'm going to have to play my very best tennis, if not above that."
"Yeah, I'm just looking forward to a battle," she continued. "I mean, I've got nothing to lose. Ultimately we have no pressure. Again, I see us as the underdogs. We have nothing to lose and just go out and play and enjoy and enjoy the moment."
Iga Swiatek and Katie Boulter have never crossed paths on the tour before, so their current head-to-head stands at a 0-0 deadlock.
Katie Boulter feeling confident heading into the United Cup QF showdown against Iga Swiatek
Having started her season with two wins, Katie Boulter is feeling confident heading into the United Cup quarterfinal showdown against Iga Swiatek. She has not dropped a set at the tournament so far, coming through comfortable wins over Nadia Podoroska and Olivia Gadecki.
Reflecting on her performance in the latter encounter in the aforementioned press conference, the Brit said she was able to play some of her best tennis despite not feeling the most comfortable out on the court. She also heaped praise on her opponent, saying she cannot be counted out at any point, a fact that made the win even more rewarding.
"Yeah, I was really happy the way that I managed to bring some of my best tennis," Katie Boulter said. "Even though I wasn't feeling amazing out on the court, I felt like I felt better in my first match."
"You can never sleep on her. You know, she's such a good player. I know what she's capable of, and I know how good she's also going to be. She's got a great ball strike. She can come back at any moment," she added.
Boulter is coming off of a career-best season in 2024, one where she lifted her biggest Tour-level title at San Diego and broke into the top-25 of the world rankings.
