Katie Boulter has candidly shared her perspective about her matchup with fiance Alex de Minaur at the 2025 United Cup. The couple will find themselves on opposing sides as Great Britain faces Australia, just days after sharing the news of their engagement.
Great Britain claimed a 2-1 win over Australia when they faced off in last year's edition of the prestigious team event, as Boulter triumphed over Ajla Tomljanovic and De Minaur fell short against Cameron Norrie. The couple is set for a blockbuster rematch between their respective countries, scheduled to take place on January 1 in Sydney.
Speaking in her pre-tournament press conference, Katie Boulter admitted that she was dreading the matchup with Alex de Minaur at the United Cup on both a personal and professional level. Nevertheless, the Brit emphasized her determination to deliver her best effort to pull off the win against Australia.
Boulter also acknowledged that it was unlikely she and De Minaur would meet on the court directly, as it was uncertain whether they would represent their respective countries in the mixed doubles clash.
"I can confirm I would rather not play him. On a personal level, on a tennis level, on every level I would much rather play someone else. But of course, I will still try and do my best and hopefully get one up on him on something," Boulter said.
"So, yeah, I'm relying on the team for this one. We need a win. I'm not taking anything else other than that. So, yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens out there, but I don't know if he'll play mixed. I don't know if I'll play mixed. I think there's a lot of unknowns at the moment," she added.
"Great for bragging rights" - Katie Boulter on United Cup clash with fiance Alex de Minaur
Despite acknowledging the challenge of squaring off against her fiance, Alex de Minaur, at the 2025 United Cup, Katie Boulter disclosed that whichever one of them emerged victorious would earn "bragging rights" in their relationship.
Boulter also expressed excitement about facing De Minaur and the Australian team on their home turf while acknowledging that Great Britain were the "underdogs."
"I wouldn't say that I was thrilled at the idea of playing him all over again. He's a top 10 player and he knows how to play tennis so there is one side of it, there is a personal side of it as well which is difficult but also great for bragging rights," Katie Boulter said.
"I'm looking forward to the match of course. I think it's going to be a great atmosphere. Playing Australia is always going to be fun. It's another opportunity for us, we're definitely the underdogs so let's put pressure on them," she added.
Katie Boulter will face Olivia Gadecki to kick off the highly anticipated contest between Great Britain and Australia in Sydney. Subsequently, Alex de Minaur will square off against Jack Draper, followed by a mixed doubles showdown.
