Milos Raonic breaking the record for most aces in a best-of-three-sets match at the Queen's Club Championships has left fans unethusiastic. The Canadian 47 aces against Cameron Norrie in the opening round as he staged an impressive comeback to see off the home favorite (6)6-7, 6-3, 7-6(9) in two hours and 15 minutes.
Raonic's serves have been a huge part of his game throughout his career, but his recent injury struggles have resulted in a dip in the form of the 33-year-old. He skipped out the entire clay swing and returned at the Libema Open where made an impressive quarterfinal run losing to the eventual champion Alex de Minaur.
He entered the Queen's Club Championships with a protected ranking and showed glimpses of his former self as he executed a devastating serving show. He won 47 out of the total 110 points via aces and also served out a perfect game, that is hit four unanswered serves to close out a game.
Fans were unimpressed by Milos Raonic's performance as they hated the fact that the points weren't actually being played. One of the fans said how they found this type of performance boring and were reminded of Pete Sampras' game.
“That's the kind of stat that would drive me away from tennis. I can't think of anything more boring. I felt exactly the same in the era of Sampras.”
Another fan joked how they missed Raonic when he was injured but as soon as the Canadian returned, they wanted him to go away since he was a 'servebot'.
“Me when Milos is injured: aww I miss him, I hope he comes back. Me when Milos is playing: stupid servebot why can't he go away," the fan said.
Here are some other fans sharing the same feelings.
“That's not the kind of tennis that I want to watch. Is it even tennis. To my mind it's like comparing a golf driving range to a round of golf.” a fan complained
“But the serve is the only shot he has……..boring.” another fan complained
“Basically Norrie just stood around for the match." a fan said
“This is why I always struggled to watch Raonic play and found his game boring.” a fan opined
"My serve has always been the most important shot to me" - Milos Raonic
Speaking on the record after his match, Milos Raonic said he needed every single ace to come through Cameron Norrie. He mentioned that the serve was his most important shot and the record was special and meaningful to him.
“With the scoreline and having to save match points, I probably needed every single one of those. But my serve has always been the most important shot to me. This small record, it's something special, something meaningful," Raonic said.
The former World No. 3 was glad that he managed to win the match as he wouldn't have been as happy with the record had he lost the match.
“I’m glad that behind that also stands a win because maybe I'd feel differently or maybe a bit more sour if I was to get that many free points and lose the match. So overall, a very positive thing and a fun stat to be proud of,” he added.
Milos Raonic will next face the winner of the opening round match between Taro Daniel and fourth seed Taylor Fritz next. While the Canadian boasts a commanding 3-0 lead over the Japanese, he is yet to play the American.
