Coco Gauff's 'digging deep' celebration against Iga Swiatek at the 2025 United Cup Final has sparked polarizing views from tennis fans. While many of them have felt that the American's behavior lacked 'class', others felt that her celebration was normal.
Gauff and Swiatek played the first match of the United Cup final, with the American winning 6-4, 6-4. After converting match point, the 20-year-old did the 'digging deep' celebration to seemingly indicate that she brought out her best tennis in order to defeat an opponent she has struggled against in the past.
However, her celebration didn't sit well with many fans. One fan called Team USA out for having 'cringe' celebrations.
"Team USA always win cringe celebration contest," the fan said.
A fan mentioned how they were used to such behavior from Gauff.
"Were you expecting something else? lack of class as always," the fan stated.
Here are some other reactions from tennis fans with a fan targeting Danielle Collins alongside Gauff, possibly alluding to her bizarre handshake with Swiatek.
"Maybe some class? Cause you can't find it in her or Collins," a fan questioned.
"TF is that? What’s the point of doing anything like it before handshake," A fan felt.
However, some fans jumped to Coco Gauff's defense as they found the celebration normal.
"It means she had to dig deep to get through this match with a win," a fan explained.
“'No class' I actually need the lot of y’all to get over yourselves," a fan commented.
The celebration was followed by an 'unusual' handshake at the net between the two women.
"It came from Denis Kudla" - Coco Gauff reveals the origins of the 'shovel' celebration
During the post-tournament press conference, Coco Gauff explained where her 'shovel' celebration came from. Se explained how the now retired Denis Kudla kept motivating her during her match against Zhang Shuai with the phrase 'great digging, keep digging', which ultimately birthed the celebration.
"It came from Denis. Honestly, I think it started, like, in my match against China. I was playing Shuai, and she was playing really great tennis. You know, he was, like, great digging, keep digging. Then the shovel celebration came from him. I just kind of took it and ran with it. That was the theme of the week for me."
Coco Gauff's monumental performance helped her win the title of MVP at the 2025 United Cup. The American will kick off her campaign at the Australian Open next where she was semifinalist last year.
