Tennis fans were left feeling frustrated after Caroline Wozniacki was labeled 'Mom on a mission' following her victory against Elina Svitolina in the first round of the 2024 Bad Homburg Open. Wozniacki, who married former NBA All-Star David Lee in 2019, has two children, Olivia Wozniacki Lee, born in June 2021, and James Wozniacki Lee, born in October 2022.
Wozniacki was awarded a wildcard entry into the main draw of the WTA 500 grass court tournament in Germany. She kicked off her campaign with a victory over seventh seed Elina Svitolina, winning 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-5 in the first round.
This marked Wozniacki's second win against the Ukrainian in their seven encounters and her first triumph on grass since her second round win against Veronika Kudermetova at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.
The WTA's official social media account celebrated Caroline Wozniacki's victory by sharing a video of her winning moment, dubbing it "Mom on a mission".
"Mom on a mission @CaroWozniacki fights her way into the second round after an incredible match against fellow tour mom Svitolina!" the WTA posted on X (formerly Twitter).
However, tennis fans were quick to express their discontent with this label, arguing that Wozniacki's accomplishments as an athlete surpass her role as a mother. They voiced their opinions on the matter on social media.
One fan criticized the WTA's fixation on the "Mom on a mission" caption, deeming it a failure and an embarrassment.
"Why are they so obsessed w this flop caption, like it’s legit embarrassing now!" a fan posted.
Another fan urged the WTA to refrain from using "mom" in their captions.
"Stop this endless ‘Mom’ cr*p," a fan wrote.
One fan argued that reducing the former World No.1's win to just a "Mom on a mission" was "superfluous" and "trivialising." The fan also questioned why the WTA emphasizes the motherhood angle while the ATP does not highlight the fatherhood aspect when male players like Taylor Fritz win a match.
"She’s [Caroline Wozniacki] a professional tennis player. The ‘mom’ is superfluous and trivialising. Does ATP social media describe [Taylor] Fritz as a ‘dad on a mission’? Do better," a fan posted.
"1. we are already tired of this "mom" narrative. don't see the same energy when bublik/fritz/musetti etc win matches. 2. even if you can't get rid of the narrative, at least come up with a new caption other than "mom on a mission", IT'S OLD AND REUSED," another fan wrote.
Many fans stated that they were tired of the "mom" narrative and called on the WTA to discontinue its usage.
"Please stop labeling female athletes as”Moms”! They are much more than that. Male athletes are not identified as their role as Dads," a fan posted.
"Mom this, mom that OMG!!! Can y’all stop??? Surely these women are not defined by being mothers," a fan wrote.
"Everytime someone with a child wins, yall feel the need to point out that they’re a mom! PLEASE STOP!" a fan posted.
