Great Britain's Andy Murray and Dan Evans saved five match points to pull off an incredible win in the men's doubles first round at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 37-year-old is playing his last tennis tournament and his next loss could lead to his retirement. However, Murray denied retirement, at least, temporarily.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist announced before the event in Paris that it would be his last professional tennis tournament. He was scheduled to play the singles and the men's doubles event but Murray withdrew from singles before the draw.

He is participating only in the men's doubles event with Dan Evans. A loss at any stage before the final would mean Murray would retire before the Olympics end. The Brit was extremely close to hanging up his boots on Sunday, July 28, in the first round against Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori.

Japan won the first set convincingly but Britain fought back and won the second set in a tiebreaker. At the Olympics, a match tie-break comes into effect instead of a deciding set in the doubles event. The first team to reach 10 points wins the match.

Japan was on a roll as they took a 9-4 lead and earned five match points. From such a dire situation, Murray and Evans fought back valiantly and won seven points consecutively to win the match. They saved five match points to win 2-6, 7-6(5), 11-9.

The British pair took to Instagram to express their elation after the incredible comeback win. They uploaded a joint post and wrote:

"Just unbelievable, I’ve never played a doubles match like that" - Andy Murray after Paris Olympics 2024 1R

Following his win in the men's doubles first round at the 2024 Paris Olympics partnering with Dan Evans, Andy Murray revealed what an experience it was.

“We just tried to play every point at the end. I thought we were done... Evo [Evans] came out with some good returns. I had a couple of good serves at 6/9 to get us to 8/9," Andy Murray said (via ATPTour).
"Just unbelievable. I’ve never played a doubles match like that where I’ve saved that many consecutive match points. A special place to do it obviously,” he added.

Murray and Evans had also partnered during the 2024 French Open but faced defeat in the first round. Again in Paris, this time for the Olympics, they have advanced to the second round and will face the winner between France's Arthur Fils/Ugo Humbert and Belgium's Sander Gille/Joran Vliegen.
