Alison Riske-Amritraj expressed her opinions regarding the playing conditions at the Australian Open on social media. As a WTA player, Riske-Amritraj is very aware of how matches in Melbourne can be extended well into the night. She posted an Instagram story where she talked about the playing conditions at the Grand Slam.
After Daniil Medvedev's match against Learner Tien in the second round, Riske-Amritraj was very firm in her opinion on the tournament organization regarding the playing conditions in Melbourne. The match between the Russian star and Tien finished after 2 A.M. due to a rain delay, combined with the fact that the players battled through five sets.
"2 A.M. and a rain delay...It is time that our governing bodies look out for the players. We often (hear) of governing bodies wanting to shorten the season for players' well-being. Well, what about what happens DURING the season for a player's well-being?"
Daniil Medvedev was looking to win his first Australian Open. He has lost three finals at the event, including last year's final. Tien's victory over the Russian could be considered the biggest surprise of the tournament at this point. Time will tell if the American athlete will continue to impress with his performance in Melbourne.
Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open
Daniil Medvedev's early exit at the Australian Open comes 12 months after his appearance in the final of the tournament. A victory at the opening Grand Slam of the season has slipped through Medvedev's fingers once again.
The first final Medvedev played at the Australian Open took place in 2021, when he lost against Novak Djokovic. His opponent from that night has won the tournament ten times.
The most recent final Medvedev played at the Australian Open took place last year. This time around, it was Jannik Sinner who prevented the Russian from being crowned in Melbourne. Medvedev's fans will have to wait until 2026 in order to find out if Daniil can capture his first Australian Open.
