Maria Sakkari recently teased her compatriot Stefanos Tsitsipas about his engagement with girlfriend Paula Badosa. The Greek pair is currently representing their nation at the United Cup.
In an interview posted on the tournament's official Instagram account, the pair discussed the recent wave of tennis stars taking their relationships to the next level. Casper Ruud and Maria Galligani, Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nina Ghaibi, Alexei Popyrin and Amy Pederick, and Marton Fucsovics and Nini Molnar all announced their engagements during the off-season.
Tsitsipas predicted that Sakkari would be the first to get engaged between the two. The latter, however, quipped that it would be the former who would take the plunge but keep it a secret. He laughed and agreed, calling it a "smart" move.
Tsitsipas: "I think Maria."
Sakkari: ""Hey, No, you, for sure. Nah, come on! You just don't say yourself because she will expect it."
Tsitsipas: "That's smart from me, actually."
Sakkari: "So then you just throw the ball to me?"
Tsitsipas: "Easier that way."
Sakkari: "It has been very intense this off-season with the engagements."
Tsitsipas: "It has been. I've been paying attention."
Stefanos Tsitsipas is going steady with his girlfriend Paula Badosa
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are among the most talked-about couples in tennis, and they share a happy relationship. The couple frequently posts about each other on social media, offering fans a glimpse into their life together.
Rumors of a blossoming romance between Tsitsipas and Badosa began during the 2023 French Open when the Spaniard was spotted in the audience at one of Tsitsipas' matches. The couple briefly parted ways in May 2024 but reunited later that same month.
Talking about why they decided to be together again, the Greek told the media:
"Well, it's all because of love. Yeah, it is if you think about it... On both sides. It all has to do with love and getting to combine love and tennis is quite exceptional."
Badosa chimed in, saying:
"I agree with him. I do it for this reason and because it is something very special and not everyone is lucky enough to be able to share such moments. And we have it."
"We also have a very beautiful relationship and we want, if time permits of course, to share such moments, it's something unique - why not? And after all, we are tennis players, but we are also people with feelings. So I think that's a cool thing," she added.
