Former World No.1 Martina Navratilova has reacted to Leeds University's gender-neutral language guidelines, which urges students to use more gender-inclusive terms in regular conversations. The 67-year-old has also stated her belief that things will be better in the US if current vice-president Kamala Harris wins the presidential election this year.
Navratilova, a player who dominated women's tennis for the first two-thirds of the 1980s, called out Leeds University's guidelines, as she reacted to an article from The Sun about its inclusive language guidelines. Leeds University has set out guidelines aiming to promote the use of language that is inclusive, and not using terms that may cause offense or exclude certain groups of people.
According to Navratilova, the implementation was not only insane but also 'b******t. She took to her X to write:
"This is utter b******t as well as insane. I mean WTAF??????"
One fan commented with their opinion that the same would happen in the United States under Kamala Harris' presidency:
"Won't get better under Kamala."
Martina Navratilova responded by saying:
"I believe it will."
The Leeds University spokesman shed light on their inclusive language guidelines, noting:
"Our inclusive language guide uses materials published by government and charities to foster a more equal and fairer society" (via The Sun).
The University of Leeds' inclusive language guide also wants scholars to avoid using any terms that could cause offense or discomfort. Instead, it aims to promote the use of more neutral language that "acknowledges diversity and conveys respect to all people."
Martina Navratilova does not want a career in politics due to her honesty
When Martina Navratilova was asked about a probable future in politics for her outspokenness, she jokingly refused by saying that her honesty might land her in trouble. She said on a podcast appearance in December 2023:
"I’ve been asked many times. But I think truth doesn’t work in politics. You know, I speak my mind way too much. I think maybe as a guy you can get away with it but as a woman, I just don’t know, but I think I am too old for that. 20 years ago, I wish if I was 20 years younger I would run. But I don’t have the energy for it now, and the skin. Really it’s just too nasty."
Martina Navratilova has been vocal about her opinion on several political and social matters over the years. She won a combined total of 59 major titles during her playing career in tennis.
