Martina Navratilova blamed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for letting numerous terrorists in Afghanistan "go free" but denied former president Joe Biden's ties. Her remarks came in response to a distressing child marriage case recently reported in the country.
The cases of child marriage have been steadily increasing in Afghanistan. Restrictions imposed by the Taliban, such as banning education for girls over 12, coupled with the nation’s economic crisis, have significantly contributed to this alarming rise.
Per El País, a survey conducted by the local organization Bishnaw-Wawra in August revealed that 70% of over 3,000 young women interviewed were aware of girls forced into marriage before turning 18.
In a harrowing case from the Taliban-ruled state, a 6-year-old girl was forced to marry an elderly man, with her parents justifying the decision due to her early puberty. Despite her protests, the child was taken from her home. Journalist Dr. Maalouf reported the incident on X.
Martina Navratilova, a consistent advocate for social issues, condemned those responsible for enabling such incidents, referring to them as "monsters.:
"Monsters, all of them who allow this," she wrote.
During his first term, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration negotiated a peace agreement with the Taliban to end two decades of conflict in Afghanistan. Moreover, upon taking office after Trump, Joe Biden upheld the deal but extended the timeline, completing the troop withdrawal in August 2021.
Amid the chaotic withdrawal of the U.S. forces, the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan, becoming the effective rulers after taking over Kabul.
Recalling the turn of events a fan wrote:
"Biden made it all possible."
Navratilova has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump, consistently expressing her views on the President-elect during the recent U.S. presidential election. Moreover, the American tennis icon disagreed with the fan's statement and responded:
"Bullsh**- trump made the deal with the Taliban and let many taliban terrorists go free- try again."
"Fear and anger won": Martina Navratilova said after Donald won the 2024 U.S. presidential elections
The Republican Party held the upper hand in the race for office, amassing 295 electoral votes and surpassing the 270 majority mark. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party secured 226 electoral votes. Notably, Trump will be the second Republican in 20 years, after George Bush, to win a second term.
Martina Navratilova, however, voiced her disapproval of Trump's victory, describing the nation as a racist patriarchy in a post on X.
"Well, trump won. Fear and anger won. And a country that was born as a racist patriarchy proved beyond any reasonable doubt it still is a racist patriarchy. Not sure when this ceases to be true…"
In addition to Navratilova, former US Open champion Andy Roddick has also been a vocal critic of Trump.
