Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has criticized Amazon, owned by $232 billion-worth tech czar Jeff Bezos, for shelling out $40 million to incoming US First Lady Melania Trump for a documentary on her life.
The documentary, set to stream on Prime Video later this year, promises to offer an unprecedented look into the model-turned-US first lady's life.
Veteran journalist Roland Martin, who runs the “Unfiltered” show on YouTube, strongly condemned Amazon’s decision. Martin claimed it was an attempt made by Bezos to put money "directly" in Trump's pockets and keep him from targeting Amazon.
“This is a way to directly put money in the pockets of Donald Trump in order to keep him from targeting your company,” Roland said, arguing that “there is nothing interesting about Melania Trump worth a $40 million documentary.”
Siding on the issue with Martin, Martina Navratilova wrote, “Right on Ronald.”
In another post, the 18-time Grand Slam winner claimed that Bezos had legally bribed Team Trump through the documentary deal.
“What has she (Melania) done?,” Navratilova questioned. “Nothing… had a child with trump and raised him pretty much by herself. Kudos for that. 40 million? “
She added, “If that’s not a legal bribe, I don’t know what is.”
Bezos has been seen cozying up to Trump as the Republican is set to assume charge for his second term. In December, Amazon announced $1 million towards Trump's inauguration fund.
The Washington Post, which Bezos bought for $250 million in 2013, refused to endorse both Trump and his adversary, Democrat Kamala Harris. This was the first time in 36 years that the paper did not endorse a presidential candidate. According to reports, Bezos had asked the left-leaning newspaper to stay "neutral," triggering a backlash from many employees.
After Trump was declared the victor, Bezos commended him on "an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory.” The technocrat is set to attend Trump's inauguration on Monday.
Martina Navratilova is extremely critical of US President-elect Donald Trump
Martina Navratilova has never shied away from sharing her political opinions online and often takes potshots at the soon-to-be president Donald Trump.
The tennis legend endorsed Kamala Harris in the last US election and was dismayed when Trump beat her by a decisive margin in both popular and electoral college votes to claim victory.
"Well, Trump won. Fear and anger won. And a country that was born as a racist patriarchy proved beyond any reasonable doubt it still is a racist patriarchy. Not sure when this ceases to be true."
Recently, Martina Navratilova alleged that Trump himself is the "swamp" in Washington DC that he claims to want to drain. The tennis legend has also taken digs at the Republican's followers, describing them as "deluded" and "brainwashed."
