Martina Navratilova sarcastically reacted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently pressing charges against a company run by President-elect Donald Trump's Commerce Secretary nominee, Howard Lutnick. The charges involve serious accusations of violations of securities laws, which, according to the SEC, were attempts to mislead investors.
On Sunday, December 15, an X (formerly Twitter) page, 'Citizens for Ethics', shared a CNBC news report titled, 'SEC charges Cantor Fitzgerald, led by Trump's Commerce pick, with breaking securities laws.' The report also stated that the financial services company has vowed to not commit such violations in the future and would settle the case by coughing up a civil penalty to the tune of $6.75 million.
18-time singles Major champion and former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova, who takes a keen interest in US politics, caught wind of the development and reacted to it sarcastically, writing:
"Wow.."
Apart from being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Commerce Department, Lutnick also happens to be the Trump's transition team's co-chair.
Navratilova, one of the fiercest critics of Trump and the Republicans from the tennis world, has continued to criticize the President-elect even after his victory in the recently-concluded 2024 presidential elections.
Recently, the former World No. 1 hit out at prominent news media organization ABC News over its decision to pay a staggering sum of money to Trump to settle the defamation lawsuit filed against it by the President-elect.
Martina Navratilova reacted furiously to ABC News' decision to settle Donald Trump's defamation lawsuit
Renowned news media organization ABC News stirred controversy when one of its most prominent anchors, George Stephanopoulos, claimed without evidence that Donald Trump was "liable for rape." In reality, Trump was found 'liable for sexual abuse', which carries a significantly different legal definition under New York law.
It did not take long for the former President to file a defamation lawsuit. While ABC News did initiate its legal defense, it recently decided to settle matters by paying $15 million to Trump. The development infuriated Martina Navratilova, who took to X and harshly labeled the news media organization:
"Cowards"
Navratilova herself had wrongly called Trump a 'rapist' earlier this year after a former US Representative supportive of the President-elect claimed that he would protect girls and women in his second term as President.
The Czech-American had backed Kamala Harris' bid for presidency, and was devastated when the 2024 election results came out in favor of Trump.
