Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has expressed her shock at the recent comments made by House Speaker Mike Johnson regarding federal disaster relief for California’s devastating wildfires. Johnson declined to commit to offering unconditional federal disaster aid to California.

The wildfires in California have been catastrophic, with numerous blazes like the Palisades and Eaton Fires ravaging communities across the state. Entire neighborhoods have been obliterated, leaving thousands of residents displaced, and tragically, the death toll continues to rise.

As California struggles to cope with the consequences of these disasters, House Speaker Mike Johnson has stirred controversy by proposing that federal disaster aid be conditioned on state and local policy reforms.

This has prompted intense debates, with some Republicans supporting the idea of linking aid to policy changes, while Democrats and other critics feel it politicizes disaster relief and may undermine the state’s recovery efforts.

In a recent NBC News interview, Johnson addressed concerns about federal disaster aid for California amid ongoing wildfires. When asked if he could ensure that such aid would come without conditions, Johnson declined, highlighting issues in California's disaster management.

"No I won't commit to that (unconditional funding) because we have a serious problem in California. Listen, there are natural disasters I'm from Louisiana we're prone to that, we understand how these things work but then there's also human error and when the state and local officials make foolish policy decisions that make the disaster exponentially worse we need to factor that in and I think that's a common sense notion in California over the last couple years," he said.

According to Johnson, California's budgetary decisions worsened the effects of the wildfires and suggested that such factors should be considered when allocating federal disaster relief.

Martina Navratilova criticized Republican Senator Roger Marshall for endorsing a conditional federal aid proposal for California wildfires.

On January 15, an X user shared a video of a conversation between Stuart Varney of Fox Business and Senator Marshall during a Senate Confirmation Hearing. Varney asked Marshall if federal aid should be conditional on California revoking climate policies. Marshall agreed, suggesting that President-elect Trump should push California to change its environmental laws.

The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion reshared the clip, expressing her disapproval with a brief two-word comment:

"Pure insanity".

In other news, Martina Navratilova criticized President-elect Donald Trump for climate change denial amid the ongoing California wildfires.
