Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has voiced her strong disapproval of Republican Senator Roger Marshall's suggestion that federal aid to California should come with conditions, such as repealing climate rules. Navratilova expressed her disbelief at the situation, calling it "pure insanity."
California is enduring one of its most catastrophic wildfire seasons in history, with blazes like the Palisades and Eaton Fires ravaging communities. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, thousands have been displaced, and the death toll continues to mount.
On Wednesday, January 15, an X user shared a clip of a conversation between Stuart Varney of Fox Business and Senator Roger Marshall during a Senate Confirmation Hearing segment. During the discussion, Varney asked Senator Marshall if federal aid for California should be conditional on forcing the state to repeal climate rules.
Senator Marshall responded affirmatively to both questions, suggesting that aid should come with strings attached and that President-elect Donald Trump should force California to change its environmental policies.
"I just remind all your listeners that whether in the past, when we’ve given money for hurricane relief in Louisiana, wherever it is, there have been strings attached. Point number two is, let’s not forget the people in North Carolina, the flood victims that still don’t have homes as well. But we do need strings attached," Marshall said.
"We need accountability. We need to make sure that these monies, and they’re talking about $150 billion – that they’re invested in the right place. We’ve seen California mismanage their forests and mismanage their water," he added.
Martina Navratilova, known for her advocacy on various social issues, reshared the video and expressed her strong disapproval with a two-word reaction:
"Pure insanity".
Martina Navratilova calls out Senator John Barrasso for "strings attached" remark on LA wildfire relief
Martina Navratilova criticized Republican Senator John Barrasso's remarks about federal aid for the California wildfires, where he suggested the aid should come with "strings attached."
Barrasso, during an appearance on CBS News 'Face The Nation,' argued that disaster aid for California should include "conditions" to improve future disaster preparedness.
"I expect that there will be strings attached to money that is ultimately approved, and it has to do with being ready the next time, because this was a gross failure this time," Barrasso said.
The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion expressed her disappointment with what she saw as a politically charged approach to disaster relief, saying:
"Disgraceful stuff from Barrasso."
